Effects of Talinum paniculatum (Jacq.) Gaertn. leaf extract on general toxicity and pubertal development of rats

Abstract: Talinum paniculatum (Jacq.) Gaertn. (Talinaceae), popularly known as “major gomes,” is a Brazilian Cerrado plant used in traditional medicine and as a food source. Recent studies have demonstrated its diuretic effects. However, no studies have been performed on its effects on the reproductive system. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effects of the ethanol-soluble fraction of T. paniculatum leaves (ESTP) on general toxicity and on the pubertal development of male and female Wistar rats. For this purpose, … Show more

This plant has several pharmacological effects including antioxidant (Lestario dkk., 2009), anti-cancer (Liu et al, 2018), anti-diabetic (Jenie & Indraswari, 2021), anti-microbial (Cerdeira et al, 2020), to treat cardiovascular and urinary tract diseases (Tolouei et al, 2021) and to enhance spermatozoa motility and viability (Aini & Susilo, 2023). Flavonoid is one of the prominent bioactive compounds that are contained in all parts of T.paniculatum and has been known to its several bioactivities, including antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic and anti-cancer (Eddijanto et al, 2022).…”

“…This plant leaf is commonly consumed as a vegetable supplement and the roots are used as a reproductive tonic in Thailand's traditional practice [ 1 ]. In addition , T. paniculatum or “major gomes” and “erva gorda” in Brazil is consumed and used to treat different cardiovascular disorders in folk medicine [ 2 ]. Further study to confirm the ethnomedicine of this plant extract exhibited the estrogenic activity [ 1 ], diuretic effect after prolonged exposure [ 2 ], and cardioprotective effects through serum antioxidant activity and ACE inhibition, preventing alterations of hemodynamic and endothelial function, and reducing damage to cardiac structure in a rat model [ 3 ].…”
