Effects of Saccharomyces boulardii on cytokine secretion from intraepithelial lymphocytes infected by Escherichia coli and Candida albicans

Abstract: Saccharomyces boulardii (S. boulardii) is a probiotic and used in the prevention or treatment of diarrhoea. Saccharomyces boulardii has many mechanisms to protect the host against diarrhoeal pathogens. It might modulate the immune system. In this study, the influence of S. boulardii on the secretion of cytokines from intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) infected with Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Candida albicans (C. albicans) was investigated in vitro. Cytokine levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosor… Show more

“…Sb produces a soluble anti-inflammatory factor that inhibits NF-κB activation and attenuates pro-inflammatory signalling in host cells. In addition, Sb stimulates IL-10 secretion from intraepithelial lymphocytes infected by C. albicans and Escherichia coli [29]. As Sc1-1 was shown to be comparable to Sb and presents the same beneficial features against C. albicans and intestinal inflammation, Sc1-1 was considered as the reference strain in the DSS model.…”

“…The antifungal effect of probiotic bacteria, especially Lactobacillus spp, has been evaluated in a number of in vitro studies using conventional agar diffusion assays on solid media, biofilm assays and microscopy (Chew et al 2015b;Verdenelli et al 2014;Vilela et al 2015). The underlying fungicidal or fungistatic effects of probiotics may involve the production of secondary metabolites with antimicrobial activity (Ceresa et al 2015;Vilela et al 2015;Zakaria Gomaa 2013), the competition for nutrients and adhesion sites (Servin and Coconnier 2003) and the stimulation of the immune system (Fidan et al 2009). Others have also shown that probiotic bacteria have the ability to suppress biofilm formation by C. albicans on various surfaces, such as silicone and related biomaterials (Ceresa et al 2015;Murzyn et al 2010;Orsi et al 2014;Rodrigues et al 2006b).…”

“…These effects are due to a number of direct mechanisms including binding to and elimination of pathogenic bacteria [9], [10], [13], actions on virulence factors [11], and modification of bacterial motility [14]. Indirectly, S.b -B also affect the host response, in particular through interference with the bacterial-induced signalling pathway [9], [10], [15], [16], [17] and beneficial cross-talk with the innate immune system [18][21].…”
