Effects of hydrogen-rich water prepared by alternating-current-electrolysis on antioxidant activity, DNA oxidative injuries, and diabetes-related markers

Abstract: Hydrogen-rich water is conventionally prepared by direct current-electrolysis, but has been not or scarcely prepared by alternating current (AC)-electrolysis. The AC preparations from tap water for 20–30 minutes exhibit a dissolved hydrogen concentration of 1.55 mg/L, which was close to the theoretical maximum value of 1.6 mg/L. These preparations also displayed an oxidation-reduction potential of –270 mV (tap water: +576 mV) and pH of 7.7–7.8, being closer to physiological values of body fluids than general t… Show more

“…The oral intake of HRS, which is hydrogen dissolved in water, is a portable, safe, and convenient method for administration (Sun et al, 2012;Koyama et al, 2014). Under normal atmospheric pressure and at room temperature, hydrogen can be dissolved in water up to 0.8 mmol/L (1.6 mg/L) (Asada et al, 2020). The injection of HRS can provide highly accurate hydrogen doses.…”

“…Similarly, in cigarette smoke- (CS-) induced emphysema, H 2 significantly decreased phosphorylated histone H2AX and 8-OHdG levels, which are markers of oxidative DNA damage [ 51 ]. Oral administration of water containing hydrogen-rich saline (HRS) prepared in alternating current electrolysis was effective for preventing systemic oxidative DNA injuries and for clinical diabetes treatment [ 52 ]. These findings suggest that H 2 can potentially intervene in accumulation of genetic damage in the living body caused by oxidative stress and alleviate the ageing process.…”

“…15,16,17 Molecular hydrogen has been identified as one of the antioxidants that can reduce oxidative stress. [18][19][20][21][22] Drinking water that contains a therapeutic hydrogen dose of hydrogen-rich water (HRW) is an easy method of sending molecular hydrogen into the body. Several studies on HRW show that it can reduce blood sugar levels in DM patients.…”
