Effects of host incentives on multiple listings in accommodation sharing

Abstract: Despite the importance of hosts who contribute to the success of accommodation sharing through sharing underutilized space with guests, current literature sheds little light on what exactly incentivizes hosts to grow their properties. This study investigates the effects of multifaceted motivations including financial benefits, online social interaction, and membership seniority, and their interplay on hosts' multiple listing behavior.

“…Moreover, several studies (Xie and Mao, 2019) have sought to examine the revenue management practices of different types of accommodation hosts (individual vs professional), in light of the recognition of the increasing “professionalization” of sharing economy platforms – i.e. the offering of supply by business micro-entrepreneurs (Xie and Chen, 2019), Airbnb in particular (Dogru et al , 2020). Yet, there remains a dearth of knowledge from the perspective of other disciplinary domains, which can only serve to broaden our understanding of the sharing economy.…”

“…Due to the high information transparency on peer-to-peer platforms, a few studies also focused on some social problems such as discrimination; to deal with this issue, Airbnb removed the host “selfie” information in search pages to avoid the influence of discrimination on guest choices (Ert and Fleischer, 2019). As noted above, in the context of two-sided platforms, besides the guest behavior, some recent studies have also focused on the determinants of host behavior (Xie and Chen, 2019). For example, Liang et al (2019) have looked at the determinants of host decisions to disclose their personal information to the platform.…”
