Effects of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors on continuous post-inflammatory vascular remodeling late after Kawasaki disease

Abstract: The results of this study suggested that HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors are useful as an alternative therapeutic strategy for stabilizing continuous post-inflammatory vascular remodeling that results in the development of arteriosclerosis late after KD or early onset of atherosclerosis in the future.

“…56 Two of these interventions reported significant improvement in FMD (∆ in FMD, +1.58 to +3.8%; P<0.05) and PWV (1027.2±166.4 versus 1175.4±277.3 cm/s; P=0.001). 44,55 Furthermore, in these studies, statin treatment resulted in significant total cholesterol reduction (∆ in mean total cholesterol, −0.6993 to −2.16 mmol/L; P<0.0001). 45,55 Earlier initiation of statin treatment for subjects with familial hypercholesterolemia was associated with significantly thinner CIMT values compared with later initiation (P=0.016).…”

“…This experimental result suggests that post arteritis tissue may more easily develop atherosclerosis. Intriguingly, they also demonstrated the anti-inflammatory activities of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors against the progress of acute arteritis (Hamaoka et al, 2010).…”
