Effects of growth years on ginsenoside biosynthesis of wild ginseng and cultivated ginseng

Abstract: Background Ginsenoside, as the main active substance in ginseng, has the function of treating various diseases. However, the ginsenosides content of cultivated ginseng is obviously affected by the growth years, but the molecular mechanism is not clear. In addition, there are significant differences in morphology and physiology between wild ginseng and cultivated ginseng, and the effect of growth years on ginsenoside synthesis not yet understood in wild ginseng. “…In P. ginseng, PgMYB2 enhances the expression and promoter activity of PgFPS and PgDS to promote the accumulation of saponins; PnMYB1 in Panax notoginseng can upregulate the expression of PnFPS and PnSS and increase the content of saponins . In our study, ZjMYB39 and ZjMYB4 can directly activate the expression of ZjFPS and ZjSQS and positively regulate the transcriptional activity of the promoters of the structural genes ZjFPS and ZjSQS to control triterpene synthesis.…”

“…However, CK being a minor ginsenoside is found in low amounts in the Panax rhizome and leaves 57 . The plant itself is a slow growing, perennial herb that is usually harvested only after 4–6 years and is challenged by sensitivity to various abiotic and biotic factors leading to low yield and variable ginsenoside content 58 . Panax spp.…”

“…2 a and b). Ginsenoside, as an important secondary metabolite involved in pathogen infection and stress in ginseng, also plays an invaluable role in resisting stress related to the MAPK signaling pathway [35,36]. Moreover, the ginsenoside content of roots and stems also differed signi cantly between 1-year-old and 6-year-old ginseng (Fig.…”
