Poultry farming poses challenges due to hygiene and nutrition issues, leading to disease and inflammation in chickens. One of the challenges is gram-negative bacteria that stimulate pro-inflammatory reactions through lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and cause disease and anorexia. Licorice, a medicinal plant with glycyrrhizin (Gly) as its main active ingredient, was used in our experiment to investigate the effects of glycyrrhizin on food intake in LPS-injected broilers. Accordingly, the study involved three experiments involving 72 male broiler chickens, to examine the impact of Gly. on their food intake in LPS-injected broilers (n = 24). Experiment 1 was conducted to examine the effects of IP injection of Gly. (12.5, 25, and 50 mg) on food intake in chickens. In experiment 2, the birds received intracerebroventricular (ICV) injections of LPS (6.25, 12.5, and 25 ng). In the last experiment, we investigated the impact of IP injection of glycyrrhizin on inflammation induced by LPS. Based on the findings, IP injection of glycyrrhizin significantly increased food intake in a dose-dependent manner (p < 0.05). Whereas, LPS significantly reduced food intake in food-deprived chickens. Gly. can neutralizes reduced food intake caused by inflammation in broilers, highlighting its potential role in modulating food intake in broilers.

A 70-day feeding trial was conducted to determine the effects of the replacement of fishmeal (FM) by soybean meal (SM) in diets on growth performance, digestion, hepatic metabolism, antioxidant capacity, and innate immunity of juvenile large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea). Four iso-lipidic and iso-nitrogenous diets replacing 0, 15, 30, and 45 FM protein by SM protein were formulated, named FM, SM15, SM30, and SM45, respectively. Results indicated that the specific growth rate (FM = 1.55, SM15 = 1.50, SM30 = 1.48, and SM45 = 1.34%) of fish showed a significant linear trend ( P < 0.05 ). With increasing dietary SM, the activity of trypsin (262.02, 179.34, 144.41, and 123.92 U/mg·prot) significantly decreased (linear trend, P < 0.05 ). The content of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol showed a significant linear trend and quadratic trend, and the maximum was observed in fish fed the diet with 45% protein from SM ( P < 0.05 ). The mRNA expression of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (m-tor) and ribosomal protein S6 (rps6) showed a significant linear trend ( P < 0.05 ). The content of malondialdehyde (81.82, 92.91, 79.64, and 126.45 nmol/mg·prot) showed a significant linear trend and quadratic trend; the minimum was observed in fish fed the diet with 30% protein from SM ( P < 0.05 ). The activity of acid phosphatase (328.45, 300.08, 254.03, and 223.51 U/mg·prot) significantly decreased with increasing dietary SM substitution levels (linear trend, P < 0.05 ). A significant quadratic trend was observed in the mRNA expression of interferon-γ and interleukin-1β, while the maximum was observed in fish fed the diet with 45% protein from SM ( P < 0.05 ). In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the replacement of FM by SM in diets can decrease the growth performance, digestion, antioxidant capacity, and innate immunity and affect the hepatic metabolism of juvenile large yellow croaker. The minimum negative effect was obtained when 30% of FM was replaced by SM.

A 30-day feeding trial was designed to evaluate the effect of supplemental fulvic acid (FA) on survival, growth performance, digestive ability and immunity of large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) larvae (initial body weight 11.33 ± 0.57 mg). Four isonitrogenous and isolipids diets containing 0.00%, 0.01%, 0.02% and 0.04% FA were formulated, respectively. Results showed that the supplementation of 0.04% FA significantly improved survival rate of large yellow croaker larvae. Meanwhile, supplemental FA significantly increased final body weight and specific growth rate. Based on the specific growth rate, the optimal supplementation was 0.0135% FA. Larvae fed the diet with 0.01% FA had significantly higher villus height than the control. The supplementation of 0.01%–0.02% FA significantly increased the muscular thickness of intestine. Moreover, supplementation of FA significantly increased mRNA expression of intestinal epithelial proliferation and barrier genes (pcna, zo-1 and zo-2). Diets supplemented with 0.02%–0.04% FA significantly increased the activity of trypsin in the intestinal segment, while 0.01%–0.02% FA significantly increased the activity of trypsin in the pancreatic segment. Compared with the control, supplementation of FA remarkably increased activities of alkaline phosphatase and leucine aminopeptidase in the brush border membrane of intestine. Larvae fed the diet with 0.01% FA significantly increased activities of lysozyme and total nitric oxide synthase. Furthermore, the supplementation of 0.01% to 0.02% FA significantly decreased the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (tnf-α and il-6). Concurrently, supplemental FA significantly increased anti-inflammatory cytokine (il-10) mRNA expression level. In conclusion, this study indicated that the supplementation of FA could improve the survival rate and growth performance of larvae by promoting intestinal development, digestive enzymes activities and innate immunity.
