Effects of Glycemic Control upon Serum Lipids and Lipid Transfers to HDL in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Novel Findings in Unesterified Cholesterol Status

Abstract: For the first time it was shown that in addition to triglycerides, unesterified cholesterol is also a marker of poor glycemic control. In vitro HDL lipid transfers, an important aspect of HDL metabolism, were not related with the glycemic control.

“…The high-normal range with moderately elevated levels of total cholesterol and hemoglobin A1c defines a high-risk group for the progression to diabetic nephropathy and for clinical events related to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease37. Several experimental studies discussed about potential relationship of cholesterol with diabetes mellitus type-23839404142. Total cholesterol is the most important risk factor associated with clinically significant macular edema (CSME)43.…”

“…Blood draws taken at the 6 h fasting time point were used for analysis of serum lipid profiles. An autoanalyser (7600-120 Automatic Analyser, Hitachi Inc) was used as previously described [18] and the following parameters were measured: triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C).…”

“…Although many studies have confirmed the relationship between glycemic control and lipid profiles in patients with T2D, the results are quite inconsistent [ 9 , 10 , 11 ]. Khan HA et al reported that the level of HbA1c was positively correlated with TG, TC, and LDL-C, but negatively correlated with HDL-C [ 10 ].…”
