Effects of Gibrel1 on Nitrification and Sulfur Oxidation in Different Oregon Soils12

Abstract: Kjeldahl-N. This was determined by the AOAC (1955) method. Exchange capacity and exchangeable cations were determined by the ammonium acetate method of Schollenberger and Simon (1945). Numbers of microorganisms were determined at the end of 15 days on soil samples from the nitrification experiments by plating procedure. Peptone glucose 3Appreciation is expressed to T. T. Chao, M. E. Harward, and S. C. Fang, Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station. for furnishing soil samples and permitting use of their data.

“…Jones (1948) observed that rates up to 25 lb/ac of 2,4-D were not detrimental to nitrifiers in a prairie soil in Kansas. Smith, Dawson & Wenzel (1945), Newman & Thomas (1949) and Chandra, Furtick & Bollen (1960) have all reported a temporary inhibitory effect of herbicides on soil microbial activity. Hale, Hulcher & Chappell (1957), Koike & Gainy (1952), Steenson & Walker (1957) andTeater, Mortensen & Pratt (1958) have reported adaptation of microorganisms to 2,4-DB and similar herbicides.…”

“…Water was added to bring the soil to about one-third of its field capacity and the botdes were incubated at 28° C for 8 weeks. After 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks samples were analysed for pH, and nitrite and nitrate nitrogen according to the methods described by Chandra & Bollen (1960).…”
