The rapid progress in nanotechnology has dramatically promoted the application of engineered nanomaterials in numerous sectors. The wide application of nanomaterials and the potential accumulation in the environment sparked interest in studying the effects of nanomaterials on algae and plants. Hormesis is a dose response phenomenon characterized by a biphasic dose response with a low dose stimulation and a high dose inhibition. This paper quantifies for the first time nanomaterial-induced hormesis in algae and plants. Five hundred hormetic concentration-response relationships were mined from the published literature. The median maximum stimulatory response (MAX) was 123%, and commonly below 200%, of control response. It was also lower in algae than in plants, and occurred commonly at concentrations < 100 mg L −1 . The no-observed-adverse-effectlevel (NOAEL) to MAX ratio was 2.4 for algae and 1.7 for plants, and the two distributions differed significantly. Ag nanoparticles induced higher MAX than TiO 2 and ZnO nanoparticles. The MAX varied upon nanomaterial application methods, growth stage of application (seed versus vegetative), type of endpoint and time window. While nanomaterial size did not affect significantly the MAX, sizes ≤50 nm appeared to have lower NOAEL:MAX ratio than sizes ≥100 nm, suggesting higher risks from incorrect application. The mechanisms underlying nanomaterial-induced hormetic concentration responses are discussed. This paper provides a strong foundation for enhancing research protocols of studies on nanomaterial effects on algae and plants as well as for incorporating hormesis into the risk assessment practices.

Graphical abstract Currently, hundreds of different nanomaterials with a broad application in products that make daily lives a little bit easier, in every aspect, are being produced on an industrial scale at thousands of tons per year. However, several scientists, researchers, politics, and ordinary citizens have stated their concern regarding the life cycle, collateral effects, and final disposal of these cutting-edge materials. This review summarizes, describes, and discusses all manuscripts published in the Journal Citation Reports during the last 10 years, which studied the toxicity or the effects of nanomaterials on human and environmental health. It was observed that 23.62% of the manuscripts analyzed found no ecological or human risks; 54.39% showed that several nanomaterials have toxicological effects on the ecosystems, human, or environmental health. In comparison, only 21.97% stated the nanomaterials had a beneficial impact on those. Although only 54.39% of the manuscripts reported unfavorable effects of nanomaterials on ecosystems, human, or environmental health, it is relevant because the potential damage is invaluable. Therefore, it is imperative to make toxicological studies of nanomaterials with holistic focus under strictly controlled real conditions before their commercialization, to deliver to the market only innocuous and environmentally friendly products.

Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) have huge potential for improving use efficiency of agrochemicals, crop production, and soil health; however, the behavior and fate of ENMs and the potential for negative long‐term impacts to agroecosystems remain largely unknown. In particular, there is a lack of clear understanding of the transformation of ENMs in both soil and plant compartments. The transformation can be physical, chemical, and/or biological, and may occur in soil, at the plant interface, and/or inside the plant. Due to these highly dynamic processes, ENMs may acquire new properties distinct from their original profile; as such, the behavior, fate, and biological effects may also differ significantly. Several essential questions in terms of ENMs transformation are discussed, including the drivers and locations of ENM transformation in the soil–plant system and the effects of ENM transformation on analyte uptake, translocation, and toxicity. The main knowledge gaps in this area are highlighted and future research needs are outlined so as to ensure sustainable nanoenabled agricultural applications.
