Effects of filament cross section on the performance of automotive upholstery fabrics

Abstract: Aim of this study was to investigate the effects of filament cross section on the performance of automotive upholstery fabrics. Thirty-six yarns were produced by changing the cross section of poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibers (round, octolobal and W-channel) and the air-jet texturing parameters (overfeed and number of core and effect yarns). After heat-setting and dyeing the yarns were woven into fabrics and laminated. Performance tests of both the air-jet textured yarns and the fabrics were carried out. It … Show more

“…In the same context, many references stated that microfiber yarn cross-section shapes affect the surface and mechanical properties of fabrics [8,9]. Furthermore, references revealed that fibers movement within a cross-section of microfiber filaments Polyester microfiber yarns are one of the synthetic fibers that can be produced by many crosssections.…”

“…In 1960, the production of the non-circular cross-section yarns released named trilobal [12]. Trilobal polyester is a triple cross-section yarn featuring by luster, which can allow being an alternative to an expensive silk shiny yarn [8]. The fabrics performed from this type of yarn characterize by good porosity and higher thickness [13] to overcome hydrophobicity property of polyester [14].…”

“…As a result of the study, it was found that the values obtained by using recycled fibers were in the acceptable range in terms of customer satisfaction despite some differences in yarn and fabric test results [17]. Koc et.al investigated the effect of filament cross section on automotive upholstery fabric performance in detail [18]. Avcu and Gürkan investigated the mechanical performances of double-layered woven fabrics used in car seat upholstery by measuring tear strength, breaking strength, and abrasion properties [19].…”

“…Filament cross-section also has a significant effect on air permeability. 15 In addition, the fiber cross-section affects the thermal transfer of fabric. For example, fibers with a hollow core increase thermal resistance of fabric due to poor thermal conductivity of air.…”
