Effects of feeding transgenic corn with mCry1Ac or maroACC gene to laying hens for 12 weeks on growth, egg quality and organ health

Abstract: The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of feeding two transgenic corn lines containing the mCry1Ac gene from Bacillus thuringiensis strain (BT-799) and the maroACC gene from Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain (CC-2), respectively, on growth, egg quality and organ health indicators. Expression of the mCry1Ac gene confers resistance to Pyrausta nubilalis and the maroACC gene confers tolerance to herbicides. Healthy hens (n = 96 placed in cages; 3 hens/cage) were randomly assigned to one o… Show more

“…The visceral organ is the most important of the functional organs for poultry growth and development, and a well‐developed internal organ was demonstrated to be essential for the absorption of nutrients . The present results show that the relative weight of the heart and kidney were increased in number or significance by 15 mg kg −1 PGZ supplementation, indicating that this compound may be one way to increase the utilization of nutrients .…”

“…All diets were formulated to meet or exceed the nutrient requirements for poultry (Ministry of Agriculture of PR China, 2004; National Research Council, 1994) as a guideline (see Supporting information, Table S1). 19 Diets were mixed in the order CT diet, CC diet and BT diet to minimize the potential for cross‐contamination of nontransgenic sources with transgenic sources. The existence of the mCry1Ac and maroACC genes and the mCry1Ac and maroACC proteins was detected by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method and antibody‐specific enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay method, respectively.…”

“…Most of the GM maize that is cultivated in the world is insect resistant, herbicide tolerance, or a combination of both traits. Two transgenic maizes are currently under development in China [9]. A transgenic maize line was produced by the insertion of the mCry1Ac gene that was derived from Bacillus thuringiensis strain (BT) and transcription of the mCry1Ac gene confers resistance to insect damage [9].…”
