“…Since this is precisely the type of confhct that persons with FS are sensitive to, it suggests that FS and affiliation needs should covary (see Stein & Bailey, 1973 for an altemative view).Ŝ ome studies using FS73 show this relationship (Fleming, 1974;Stewart, 1975) supporting an overlap between the constructs. Contrary to expectation other studies report nonsignificant correlations between FS68 and projectively measured n affiliation for women (Homer, 1968;Sorrentino & Short, 1974). Thus, the evidence is inconsistent.…”

“…That is, women high in avoidant affiliation are expected to reduce performance levels in competition (compared with no competition), and this should be more likely on masculine than feminine sex-typed tasks. However, based on previous studies (e.g.. Homer, 1968;Sorrentino & Short, 1974), approach affiliation dispositions (indexed by PAff and MAff) are not expected to relate to performance. For men, n affiliation has been related to performance in a number of contexts, and there is evidence for performance decrement in competitive conditions, although complexly related to levels of MS and FF (Atkinson & Feather, 1966;Atkinson & Raynor, 1974;Homer, 1968).…”
