Effects of fatty acids on T cell function: role in atherosclerosis

Abstract: T cells are among the most common cell types present in atherosclerotic plaques and are increasingly being recognized as a central mediator in atherosclerosis development and progression. At the same time, triglycerides and fatty acids have re-emerged as crucial risk factors for atherosclerosis. Triglycerides and fatty acids are important components of the milieu to which the T cell is exposed from the circulation to the plaque, and increasing evidence shows that fatty acids influence T cell function. In this … Show more

“…During the process of proliferation, differentiation, and activation of immune cells, the requirement for glucose might differ. Studies have found that inhibition of glycolysis restrains the differentiation of CD4 + T cells to Treg cells and promotes the differentiation of activated CD8 + T cells to long-lived memory CD8 + T cells [119,149] . Accordingly, we presume that timing and personalized diet should be taken into account when applying glucose restriction to supplement ICI treatment.…”

“…Indeed, TG levels did not associate either with COVID-19 infection [36] or with the risk of testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection [37]. Finally, it is worth mentioning that fatty acid can generally influence T cell activation, proliferation, and polarization [38,39].…”

“…T cells, dendritic cells and macrophages, in addition to oxidized LDL, are main components of atherosclerotic plaques [ 26 ]. In two studies, Frostegards et al demonstrated that miR-let7c expression was increased in atherosclerotic plaque induced by increases in oxidized LDL, an effect that can be abolished by statins [ 27 ] and to a lesser degree by PSCK9 inhibition [ 28 ].…”
