Effects of Fatigue in Lower Back Muscles on Basketball Jump Shots and Landings

Abstract: Introduction:The aim of this study was to explore effects of fatigue in lower back muscles on the performance of countermovement jumps (CMJ), jump shots (JS) and landing impact. Methods: Twelve male healthy collegiate basketball players (age: 22.8 ± 2.7 yrs, stature: 178.0 ± 5.1 cm, body mass: 74.5 ± 6.8 kg) volunteered to participate in this study. Data were collected utilizing a 3D motion analysis system, force plate, and surface electromyography. Field-goal percentage, the lowest point of the center of mass … Show more

“…However, the generation of more inward moment at the knee joint creates a counteracting force against the inertia, providing additional support to the body. The generated inward moment at the knee joint during cutting may also increase the risk of soft tissue injury due to insufficient internal force, as the knee joint is not able to counteract the generated moment effectively [67]. During change of direction the body is required to accelerate into a different direction, which can result in an increased knee abduction moment which may impose a significant load on the ACL [68].…”

“…It means that greater muscle force of the medial and lateral gastrocnemius in the one-step footwork provides greater plantarflexion moments and angles. This may explain why gastrocnemius muscle activity is higher when the heel take-off due to plantar flexion during stroke [39,40]. Besides, the significantly higher knee flexion angle was observed in one-step footwork, greater knee flexion and greater plantarflexion allow athletes to better utilize energy transfer throughout the kinematic chain to achieve a proper velocity of racket based on the proximal-todistal segmental sequences [36].…”
