Aim This study investigated the effects of combined organic poultry manure (PM) and inorganic foliar fertilizer (FF) on growth and yield of okra (Abelmuschus esculenthus L. Moench). Materials and methods Field trials were carried out at Shao and Teaching and Research Farm of Kwara State University, Malete, respectively, in 2013 and 2014 cropping seasons. The treatment consisted of PM at 10.0 t/ha, combinations of FF with 10.0, 7.5, 5.0, or 2.5 t/ha, FF alone and control without fertilizer arranged in a randomized complete block design and replicated three times. Results Combinations of PM and FF influenced the growth and fruit yield of okra. PM at 10.0 t/ha plus FF produced the highest plant height of 48.40 and 58.50 cm in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Also, highest number of fruits per plant and fruit yield was obtained at the same treatment over the two years. The control, without fertilizer, showed significantly longer days to flower compared with other treatments in the two years. Conclusion The highest yield obtained at PM 10.0 t/ ha ?FF was not significantly different from PM 7.5 t/ ha ?FF. Hence, poultry manure applied at 7.5 t/ha ?FF is therefore recommended.

A field experiment was conducted to assess the effect of farmyard (cattle) manure (FYM) and inorganic nitrogen (N) phosphorus (P) fertilizers on growth and tuber yield of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). The treatments consisted of factorial combination of 4 levels of FYM (0. 10, 20 and 30 t h -1 ) and three levels of inorganic NP fertilizers (0, 33.3%, 66.6% recommended rates) laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) replicated three times. Results demonstrated that the application of 20 or 30 t ha -1 FYM + 66.6% of the recommended inorganic NP fertilizers significantly increased total tuber yield over the application of full dose of inorganic NP fertilizers without FYM in vertisol whereas in nitosol, the highest level of FYM (30 t ha -1 ) + 66.6% of the recommended inorganic NP fertilizers significantly improved total tuber yield over the application of full dose of inorganic NP fertilizers without FYM. The application of 10 t ha -1 FYM + 66.6% of the recommended inorganic NP fertilizers and 20 or 30 t ha -1 FYM + 33.3% of the recommended inorganic NP fertilizers gave a total tuber yield, which was on par with the tuber yield obtained due to the application of full dose of inorganic NP fertilizer alone, in both soils. Thus, the application of 10 t ha -1 and 20 or 30 t ha -1 FYM resulted in a saving of 33.3% and 66.6% of the recommended NP fertilizers, respectively without significantly reducing the total tuber.

Effect of Organic and Inorganic Fertilizers Combination on Soil Productivity and Crop Yield of MaizeFarming in Acid Upland Soil. Continous use of inorganic fertilizers on maize farming in acid upland soil causes negative impacts on soil productivity and environment. The research aimed was to study the effect of manure and sludge combined with inorganic fertilizers to the changes in soil chemical properties, growth, production and profit of maize farming in acid upland soil. The research was conducted at Tamanbogo Experimental Farm, East Lampung from March to July 2013 using a randomized block design with four replications. The treatment consisted of 5 t/ha of cattle manure, 5 t/ha of dried sludge (by product of biogas production) and its combination with 50% and 75% of recommended rates of inorganic fertilizers (RRIF). The results showed that application of manure or sludge in combination with 50% RRIF gave the best growth and yield of maize. The plant height was between 177. 85-195.75 cm, the dry grain yield was between 4.01-4.45 t/ha and the harvest residues was between 4.62-4.58 t/ha. Most of maize biomass were accumulated at the grain (46.20%) and the rest was almost evenly distributed on the roots, stems, leaves, cob and husk. The biggest ratio of dry grain to the harvest residues was 89.52%, it was achieved by the treatment of sludge with 50% RRIF. Keywords: organic fertilizers, inorganic fertilizers, maize growth and yield ABSTRAKPenggunaan pupuk anorganik secara terus menerus pada usahatani jagung di lahan kering masam menimbulkan dampak negatif terhadap produktivitas tanah dan lingkungan. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mempelajari pengaruh penggunaan pupuk kandang dan sludge yang dikombinasikan dengan pupuk buatan/anorganik terhadap perubahan sifat kimia tanah, pertumbuhan, produksi dan keuntungan pada usahatani jagung di lahan kering masam. Penelitian dilakukan di KP Tamanbogo, Lampung Timur pada bulan Maret sampai Juli 2013 menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok dengan 4 ulangan. Perlakuan terdiri dari 5 t/ha pupuk kandang, 5 t/ha sludge (hasil samping pembuatan biogas) dan kombinasinya dengan 50% dan 75 % dosis pupuk anorganik rekomendasi (DPAR). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kombinasi antara pupuk kandang atau sludge dengan 50% DPAR memberikan pertumbuhan dan hasil jagung terbaik. Tinggi tanaman mencapai 177, 75 cm, hasil biji pipilan kering antara 4,01-4,45 t/ha dan brangkasan sisa panen antara 4,62-4,58 t/ha. Sebagian besar biomassa jagung terakumulasi pada bagian biji (46,20%) dan sisanya tersebar hampir merata pada bagian akar, batang, daun, janggel, dan kelobot. Rasio pipilan kering jagung terhadap brangkasan sisa panen terbesar adalah 89,52% yang dicapai oleh perlakuan sludge disertai pupuk anorganik pada 50% DPAR.Kata kunci: pupuk organik, pupuk anorganik, pertumbuhan dan hasil jagung
