Effects of exposure to 30 kV/m, 60‐Hz electric fields on the social behavior of baboons

Abstract: We tested the hypothesis that exposure to a 30-kV/m, 60-Hz electric field produces significant change (stress) in the social behavior of adult male baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis). One group of eight baboons was exposed to an electric field (12 hours per day, 7 days per week for 6 weeks) while a second group of eight baboons was maintained in a sham-exposure (control) condition. Exposed subjects and control subjects were compared over three, six-week experimental periods (pre-exposure, exposure, and post-e… Show more

“…The dependent variables were the rates of performance in actslh of sampling. Ten molar behavior categories were used: Descriptions of the behavior categories can be found in Coelho et al [1991]. The two behavioral observers did not know the treatment assignments; groups were designated as East and West based on location in the PEEF.…”

“…Exposure to either 30 kV/m (experiment I; Coelho et al [1991]) or 60 kV/ m (experiment 11; Easley et al [1991]) EF for 12 h/day for 6 weeks reliably produced increases in the rates of occurrence for three categories of social behavior: Passive Affinity, Tension, and Stereotypy. When analyzed week by week, the effects appeared to be temporary, occurring primarily in week 1 or 2 of exposure [Easley et al, 19921.…”

“…Two full-time observers, who were blind to the exposure schedule and group assignments, used a coritinuous, focal animal technique [Coelho and Bramblett, 1981~1 to sample each animal each day. See Coelho et al [1991] for additional details.…”

“…Rogers et al [ 1995bl report that initial exposure to a 30 Alternative Explanations for These Results kV/m or 60 kV/m EF produces only a transitory interruption of operant performance. Coelho et al [1990] and The same set of six subjects was used throughout Easley et al-[199111992] describe temporary alterations these experiments. It could be argued that potential carry-in some categories of social behavior that accompany over effects across experiments might have produced initiation of exposure to a 30 kV/m or 60 kV/m EF.…”
