Effects of Expository Text Structure Interventions on Comprehension: A Meta‐Analysis

Abstract: This meta‐analysis synthesizes results from expository text structure interventions designed to increase comprehension for students in kindergarten to grade 12 published between 1970 and 2013. Twenty‐one studies were identified, 19 of which met criteria for a meta‐analysis, including 48 studywise effect sizes that were meta‐analyzed to determine (a) how effective expository text structure interventions are in improving comprehension and (b) what features of expository text structure interventions (e.g., number… Show more

“…One example of such evidence surfaced in a recently published meta‐analysis of expository text structure interventions that spanned grades K–12 between 1970 and 2013. From that analysis, Pyle and her colleagues () concluded that despite the limitations noted below, “it is evident that expository text structure instruction is an effective research‐based reading comprehension strategy for a range of student abilities and grade levels” (p. 497).…”

“…As is the case for all research, there are limitations that need to be considered. Only 21 studies met Pyle and her colleagues’ () criteria for inclusion in their meta‐analysis; this is a relatively small corpus and consists of only five studies at grades 9–12. Because the majority of studies that were analyzed included multiple kinds of text structure, no single set of instructional features for improving students’ reading comprehension could be isolated.…”
