Eucalyptus citriodora oil has a well-known antimicrobial activity, however, its volatility limits its therapeutic applicability. Oil-in-water chitosan-based nanoemulsions have been prepared using a high-energy method in variable conditions in order to produce a stable formulation with an effective antimicrobial action. Physical-chemical characterizations and antimicrobial activity were performed. Results showed that the nanoemulsions with stability over 60 days and encapsulation efficiency higher than 90% were the ones with higher surfactant content. An optimal formulation was produced with the longer chain surfactant, which impacted in a particle size of 489.2±0.25nm and encapsulation efficiency of 92.5±0.17%. This formulation showed sustained release over 72h according to zero order kinetics, where the drug diffusion is lower than the respective dissolution release rate. The bactericidal action of the tested formulations showed an expressive inhibition rate against S. typhimurium (73%), with potential for an effective release system for antimicrobial control.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of carvacryl acetate (CVA) and nanoencapsulated CVA (nCVA) on gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep. The CVA was nanoencapsulated with chitosan/gum arabic and the efficacy of nanoencapsulation (EE), yield, zeta potential, nanoparticle morphology and release kinetics at pH 3 and 8 were analyzed. Acute and subchronic toxicity were evaluated in rodents and reduction of egg counts in the faeces (FECRT) of sheep. The sheep were divided into four groups (n = 10): G1, 250 mg/kg CVA; G2, 250 mg/kg nCVA; G3, polymer matrix and G4: 2.5 mg/kg monepantel. EE and nCVA yield were 65% and 57%, respectively. The morphology of the nanoparticles was spherical, size (810.6±286.7 nm), zeta potential in pH 3.2 (+18.3 mV) and the 50% release of CVA at pHs 3 and 8 occurred at 200 and 10 h, respectively. nCVA showed LD50 of 2,609 mg/kg. CVA, nCVA and monepantel reduced the number of eggs per gram of faeces (epg) by 57.7%, 51.1% and 97.7%, respectively. The epg of sheep treated with CVA and nCVA did not differ from the negative control (P>0.05). Nanoencapsulation reduced the toxicity of CVA; however, nCVA and CVA presented similar results in the FECRT.

As global chemical manufacturing has historically relied on inexpensive feedstocks from the petrochemical industry, the identification of new naturally derived feedstocks represents an important and sustainable alternative. This review introduces Corymbia citriodora (Hook.) K.D.Hill & L.A.S.Johnson as an attractive renewable resource of natural compounds for organic chemical transformations. Although native to Australia, this plant species is now grown and harvested worldwide. The chemical composition of citriodora oils varies with location, harvesting season and age of leaves. Beyond their historic uses as fragrances or repellents, the more abundant terpenes found in citriodora oils such as citronellal, citronellol, and isopulegol have notable roles in the manufacture of fine chemicals. This review highlights several industrial processes intimately related to the citriodora terpenes, some advances in fragrances and repellents, as well as the use of these terpenes in the most recently reported synthesis of bioactive compounds. Where relevant, processes highlighting the adoption of green chemistry principles are presented and briefly discussed.
