Effects of enzymatic hydrolysate of locust bean gum on digestibility, intestinal morphology and microflora of broilers

Abstract: To investigate the effects of different levels of enzymatic hydrolysate of dietary locust bean gum on nutrient digestibility, intestinal morphology and microflora of broilers, a total of 768 one-day-old Arbor Acres (AA) broiler chicks were randomly divided into 6 treatments with 8 replicates per treatment and 16 birds per replicate. The treatments were as follows: (1) CON, basal diet; (2) ANT, basal diet +62.5 mg/kg flavomycin; (3) LBG, basal diet +0.1% locust bean gum; (4) ELBG-0.1, basal diet +0.1% enzymatic … Show more

“…The experimental period was 42 days. The basal diet used (based on corn-soybean meal) was manufactured by Hunan Pulemei Feed Co., Ltd., (Changsha, China) according to the recommended nutrition standards [ 24 ], and to the NY/T33-2004 feeding standard for chickens. The ingredients and nutrient composition of the basal diet are shown in the Table 1 .…”

“…67 Galactomannans can serve as selective probiotics, fostering the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria in the intestinal tract while diminishing the presence of harmful pathogens such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella. 74 This bioactivity of galactomannans plays a vital role in supporting gut health and enhancing the intestinal structure. Conversely, given that cellulose primarily comprises glucose subunits, the notable glucose content found in the IDF of CP suggests that cellulose is its primary constituent.…”

“…In the insoluble fraction, the highest UA quantity was detected in the IDF of carob flours roasted at 150 °C. A previous work 74 proved that incorporating 0.3% locust bean enzymatic hydrolysate can enhance the intestinal villi surface area, increase the population of beneficial bacteria, inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, maintain the microbial balance in the intestines, and improve nutrient digestibility. Regarding Klason lignin (KL), a notable increase was observed in samples of carob flours processed at 150 °C.…”

“…Mixed with other natural compounds, it is possible to produce edible films [ 75 ]. Carob bean is used in food recipes that can benefit health [ 6 ], as antioxidants [ 76 ], because of its polyphenols and flavonoids contents; anti-diabetic effect [ 77 ], also because of its LBG, flavonoids and phenolic acids; anti-hyperlipidemia properties [ 78 ], conferred by the fibers and gastrointestinal benefits [ 79 ], thanks to the locust bean gum. It can also be used for pharmaceutical/medical purposes [ 80 , 81 ], in buccal [ 82 ], oral [ 83 ], gastric [ 84 ], colon [ 85 ], ocular [ 86 ], or topical [ 87 ] drug delivery [ 88 ] formulations.…”
