Living in rural areas has been described a driver for behaving in a pro-environmental way, mainly due to the more frequent contact with nature that people from rural areas have. However, the processes that link living in a rural area and behaving in a more ecological manner have not been systematically studied. Moreover, most studies have focused on adults living in developed countries. Given the importance that the actions conducted by people in developing countries have for the future of the environment, as well as the relevance of children's pro-environmentalism for nature conservation, we present a brief research report examining the relationship between Mexican children's place of residence and self-reported pro-environmental behavior (PEB). Participants were 200 children from Mexican rural areas (<1,000 inhabitants) and 200 from a Mexican urban city (>150,000 inhabitants). Children were between 9 and 12 years old. Children's connection to nature was considered as a mediator in the relationship between children's place of residence and PEB. Our findings revealed that rural children hold a stronger sense of connection to nature and behave in a more pro-environmental way than urban children. In addition, place of residence was directly and positively linked to their PEBs, and this relationship was mediated by children's connection to nature. The relationship between connection to nature and PEB was stronger for girls than for boys. The model explained 45% of the variance of children's self-reported PEBs.

This study aimed to examine the role of environmental commitment, environmental consciousness, green lifestyle, and green self-efficacy in influencing pro-environmental behaviour. Data were obtained through a survey of 72 students at one of the training centers in Malaysia. The hypothesized relationships were tested using partial least squares (PLS) methodology. Results showed that environmental commitment, environmental consciousness, green lifestyle, and green self-efficacy positively influenced pro-environmental behaviour, thereby providing new insights to existing literature on environmental sustainability. The results may be used by educational institutions, the government, and private agencies to strengthen students’ knowledge, attitude, and behaviour that support environment-based education. The scope of the study was limited to students at a training center, so the results may not be generalizable to different settings. Another limitation was that the study used limited contextual elements. The novelty of this study is that it examined the role of environmental commitment, environmental consciousness, green lifestyle, and green self-efficacy as determinants of pro-environmental behaviour among students in an educational setting in Malaysia.

In the study, the effects of university students' environmental concerns, nuclear power plants and renewable energy attitudes on sustainable consumption behavior were investigated with partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). For this purpose, a research model was designed with literature search and various hypotheses were developed to test the model relations. In the proposed model, sustainable consumption behavior is defined as endogenous, environmental concern is exogenous, and others are defined as endogenous latent variables. In the study, the proposed research model was analyzed using PLS-SEM and the suitability of the proposed model was evaluated according to various compliance measures. The model was analyzed separately for statistics department and engineering faculty students. In the statistical department model, one-unit increase in environmental concern causes 0.39 unit, 0.60 unit increase in attitudes towards economic and environmental dimension of renewable energy, respectively. In the engineering students model, these coefficients were calculated as 0.40 and 0.57, respectively. In addition, when the effect of economic and environmental attitudes towards renewable energy on sustainable consumption behavior is analyzed, it is determined that only economic dimension is meaningful (0.46) for statistical section and both dimensions are significant for engineering students. It was calculated that a one-unit increase in the attitudes of the engineering students towards the economic and environmental dimensions of renewable energy would lead to an increase of 0.24 and 0.23 units respectively in the sustainable consumption behavior.
