Flowering is essential in any breeding programme, particularly in genetic introgression programmes in which flowering synchronism is required. Due to changing weather conditions, the flowering vary in different planting dates with different conditions. In this work, sixteen sugarcane genotypes from different countries were tested for flowering under natural environment of Sabahia (31⁰ 12՝ N), Alexandria, Egypt. It was observed that latitude, mean minimum and maximum temperature and length of day during flowering inductive phase (September and October) were within acceptable limits to favour the flowering in sugarcane. However, flowering occurred in most of the cane genotypes under natural environment in autumn and spring seasons in both plant cane and first ratoon, but the time and percentage of flowered genotypes differed between them. Data revealed that there were some genotypes that have the same full flowering date within each planting season, moreover some genotypes which had different dates of full flowering in the same planting season had the same date with each other in another different seasons in plant cane crop. That means two or more genotypes can be synchronized in two different planting seasons. Those genotypes which synchronized with each other can be easily crossed. In general, the early stages of flowering in sugarcane germplasm under study commenced from November, but full flowering began during the month of December. In the present study, some genotypes differed in the flowering dates in each planting season. It's possible to make crossing between certain genotypes efficiently by manipulating the dates of planting.

Drainage in sugarcane cultivation in high-rainfall areas is of paramount importance because it affects sugarcane plants from planting, maintenance, and production. Poor drainage can damage plants and reduce productivity. This study was conducted at Bone Sugarcane Plantation, which typically has high annual rainfall; thus, drainage is necessary. The existing drainage channel cannot drain all surface runoff quickly and causes problems to sugarcane plants. Therefore, a study was conducted with the aim of designing the shape and size of drainage channels that can drain surface runoff quickly, have a strong structure, allows for an effective use of cultivated land by reducing headland for tractor turning, and maintains appropriate soil moisture. The research began by determining the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the soil using the Falling Head method. Surface runoff discharge was calculated using rational equations to determine the dimensions of the drainage channel. Rainfall intensity was determined from Intensity Duration Frequency curve which was constructed using Manonobe method. The results showed that the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the soil was 3.54 × 10−3 cm/s which is suitable with surface drainage. Rainfall intensity is estimated to be 201.33 mm/hour. The shape and dimensions of the drainage channel are parabolic with the largest width and depth of 1.70 m and 0.90, respectively. This study provides a practical method to solve drainage problems in sugarcane fields that apply full mechanization. In addition, the practical analysis used in this study can be adapted to analyze the design of drainage channel for other plantations or regions with similar constrains.

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is an important commercial crop grown globally for its sugar-rich stalk.Low genetic variations and unwanted flowering in modern sugarcane varieties affect sugarcane quality and production. Therefore, a panel of 628 genetically diverse sugarcane clones were evaluated under field conditions at the Regional Research Station, Kapurthala, Punjab Agricultural University during 2019–20, for quality, yield and yield traits. The effect of flowering on quality and yield traits on a sub-set of 34 flowering sugarcane clones was also studied. A panel of 628 sugarcane clones showed greater genetic diversity for all the traits. HR brix per cent varied from 14–24%, number of millable cane (NMC) varied from 13–80 and single cane weight varied from 0.4–2.6 kg in 628 clones under field conditions. Non-flowering sugarcane clones’ mean performance was greater than flowering clones for most of the traits. However, no significant differences in quality traits among the clones at different flowering stages (flag leaf, tip emergence and complete flowering) were observed. Therefore, there is a huge genetic diversity in sugarcane germplasm for quality and yield traits and it should be exploited by breeding community for the development of sugarcane varieties with improved yield and better quality.
