Effects of Elevated Ozone on Photosynthetic CO2 Exchange and Chlorophyll a Fluorescence in Leaves of Quercus mongolica Grown in Urban Area

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the responses of photosynthesis in leaves of Quercus mongolica to elevated O(3) exposure in an urban area. The results showed that the photosynthesis parameters were all decreased by the elevated O(3) during the whole season. Especially, light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (A) was reduced about 72% after 45 days exposure, and over the whole growing season, the differences were significant (p<0.05) compared with control. The reduction is related to both stomatal and no… Show more

“…The exposure to O 3 induced a decrease in F v /F m more in Peg than in Ast. Similar to our results, F v /F m was found to decline under O 3 exposure in soybean (Chen et al 2009), in Quercus mongolica (Wang et al 2009b) and in wheat at grain filling (Wang et al 2009a). However, after reducing the amount of O 3 added after 22nd May, F v /F m recovered to nearly initial values especially in Peg.…”

“…Quercus mongolica is an economically and ecologically important temperate deciduous tree species, and the secondary forest dominated by Q. mongolica accounts for large part of forest area in northeastern China. Previous study has demonstrated that elevated O 3 significantly decreased the photosynthetic rate (Pn) in Q. mongolica (Wang et al 2009). In addition, it has been illustrated that ambient level of O 3 in Japan was not high enough to suppress the growth of Q. mongolica (Matsumura 2001), but a mathematical model estimated that its annual net production was negatively affected by ambient O 3 in Korea (Wook and Kim 1997).…”

“…One leaf per plant and three plants per OTC (three OTCS per treatment, n = 9) were measured by a portable photosynthesis system (LI-6400, Li-Cor Inc., Lincoln NE, USA) to attain a mean value every 15 days. The same method of gas exchange measurements has been reported (Wang et al, 2009).…”
