EFFECTS OF ECDYSONES, JUVENILE HORMONE ANALOGS, AND 6-OXOOCTANOIC ACID ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MOSQUITO, CULEX TARSALIS (DIPTERA: CULICIDAE)

Abstract: Eggs, larvae, and pupae of Culex tarsalis Coquillett were treated with ecdysones, juvenile hormone analogs, and 6-oxooctanoic acid. Effects of these agents on mortality, induction of supernumerary stages, and adult emergence were determined. Topical treatment of eggs with CRD9499 (a juvenile hormone analog), β-ecdysone, and 22-isoecdysone caused a reduction in adult emergence. Treatment of fourth-instar larvae with these chemicals not only induced mortality but also caused the formation of supernumerary interm… Show more

“…Otros reguladores como el dimilín (difluobenzurón o TH-6040) y otros ecdisoides son venenos que actúan selectivamente en los insectos, bloqueando los mecanismos de la écdisis o muda. Estos productos, además de su elevado costo, presentan otras limitaciones porque no penetran con facilidad la cutícula del insecto y, por tanto, no han encontrado aplicación práctica en el control de insectos (19). El Bacillus thuringiensis var.…”

“…The biological effects of synthetic analog of juvenile hormone on a variety of insects have been well documented despite the fact that the mode of action of this hormone is not fully understood. Lethal effects of such an analog, or mimic, on the metamorphosis of mosquitoes were previously described (Spielman and Williams 1966;Spielman and Skaff 1967;Ittycheriah et al 1974). In Aedes aegypti female sexual receptivity was induced precociously by the topical application of a JH mimic (Gwadz et al 1971).…”
