Effects of dual tasks and dual-task training on postural stability: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: The use of dual-task training paradigm to enhance postural stability in patients with balance impairments is an emerging area of interest. The differential effects of dual tasks and dual-task training on postural stability still remain unclear. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to analyze the effects of dual task and training application on static and dynamic postural stability among various population groups. Systematic identification of published literature was performed adhering to Prefer… Show more

“…19 The mechanisms underlying such benefit are likely to be multifactorial. For instance, auditory feedback could have provided external guidance for repositioning, 12 enhanced error feedback, 6 enhanced multisensory integration, 39 strengthened perceptuomotor representations, 40 allowed selective attentional allocation, 41,42 and more 43,44 (for a detailed discussion, see Ref. 19).…”

“…This attentional change may shift the behaviour of motor and cognitive systems, constraining the performance of the primary task (Ghai et al . ). The dual‐task paradigm is commonly used to investigate attentional demands on postural control (Oliver et al .…”

“…However, those activities often require simultaneous cognitive and physical demands . In other words, daily life activities need the ability to carry out a primary motor task while attention is focused on an external source of attention (motor, cognitive, or emotional) . This paradigm where two tasks are executed at the same time is called dual task.…”

Regarding physical capacities evaluated under this paradigm, apart from strength and mobility, flexibility results might be limited by pain during the evaluation in fibromyalgia patients.…”
