The use of water-saving irrigation techniques has been encouraged in rice fields in response to irrigation water scarcity. Straw return is an important means of straw reuse. However, the environmental impact of this technology, e.g., nitrogen leaching loss, must be further explored. A two-year (2017–2018) experiment was conducted to investigate the vertical migration and leaching of nitrogen in paddy fields under water-saving and straw return conditions. Treatments included traditional flood irrigation (FI) and two water-saving irrigation regimes: rain-catching and controlled irrigation (RC-CI) and drought planting with straw mulching (DP-SM). RC-CI and DP-SM both significantly decreased the irrigation input compared with FI. RC-CI increased the rice yield by 8.23%~12.26%, while DP-SM decreased it by 8.98%~15.24% compared with FI. NH4+-N was the main form of the nitrogen leaching loss in percolation water, occupying 49.06%~50.97% of TN leaching losses. The NH4+-N and TN concentration showed a decreasing trend from top to bottom in soil water of 0~54 cm depth, while the concentration of NO3−-N presented the opposite behavior. The TN and NH4+-N concentrations in percolation water of RC-CI during most of the rice growth stage were the highest among treatments in both years, and DP-SM showed a trend of decreasing TN and NH4+-N concentrations. The NO3−-N concentrations in percolation water showed a regular pattern of DP-SM > RC-CI > FI during most of the rice growth stage. RC-CI and DP-SM remarkably reduced the amount of N leaching losses compared to FI as a result of the significant decrease of percolation water volumes. The tillering and jointing-booting stages were the two critical periods of N leaching (accounted for 74.85%~86.26% of N leaching losses). Great promotion potential of RC-CI and DP-SM exists in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China, and DP-SM needs to be further optimized.

Improving the management of water and fertilizers is an effective method for enhancing the seed‐setting performance of rice. This study aimed to explore the regulation of optimized water and nitrogen management on the root‐leaf hormone balance and seed‐setting performance of drip‐irrigated rice. In a 2‐year field experiment, T‐43 (a drought‐resistant cultivar) and LX‐3 (a drought‐sensitive cultivar) were cultivated under two drip irrigation treatments (W1, limited, and W2, deficit) and three nitrogen fertilization treatments (N1, seedling:tillering:panicle:grain‐filling, 30%:50%:13%:7%; N2, 20%:40%:30%:10%; and N3, 10%:30%:40%:20%). Compared with other treatments, the W1N2 treatment increased the seed‐setting rate and grain biomass accumulation (2.7‐9.2% and 4.5‐69.8%) of the two cultivars on the basis of producing a higher effective panicle number, and T‐43 had a much higher seed‐setting rate and yield than LX‐3 (6.8‐14.6%). Increased fertilizer applications at the panicle and grain‐filling stages (N2) enhanced the root oxidation activity (ROA) and the zeatin+zeatin riboside (Z + ZR) and gibberellic acid (GA3) contents in the roots in the 0–10 cm layer and in the leaves from the heading stage to 20 d after heading. The grain biomass accumulation of T‐43 was significantly positively correlated with ABA and Z + ZR in the roots and leaves, while the grain biomass accumulation of LX‐3 was significantly positively correlated with IAA, ABA, Z + ZR/ABA and GA3/ABA in the roots in the 10–20 cm layer. Overall, W1N2 promoted grain biomass accumulation by modulating the Z + ZR and ABA balance in roots and leaves, improved the root–shoot ratio, and enhanced ROA, thereby improving the seed‐setting performance of drip‐irrigated T‐43 rice.This article is protected by copyright. Chalkiness, which is highly affected by nitrogen (N) management during grain filling, is critical in determining rice appearance quality and consumer acceptability. We investigated the effects of N application rates 75 (N1), 150 (N2), and 225 (N3) kg ha−1 on the source-sink carbohydrate accumulation and grain filling characteristics of two indica hybrid rice cultivars with different chalkiness levels in 2019 and 2020. We further explored the relationship between grain filling and formation of chalkiness in superior and inferior grains. In this study, carbohydrates in the functional leaves and grains of the two varieties, and grain filling parameters, could explain 66.2%, 68.0%, 88.7%, and 91.6% of the total variation of total chalky grain rate and whole chalkiness degree, respectively. They were primarily concentrated in the inferior grains. As the N fertilizer application rate increased, the chalky grain rate and chalkiness degree of both the superior and inferior grains decreased significantly. This interfered with the increase in total chalky grain rate and chalkiness. Moreover, the carbohydrate content in the functional leaves increased significantly in N2 and N3 compared with that in N1. The transfer of soluble sugar from the leaves to the grains decreased the soluble sugar and increased total starch contents, accelerated the development of grain length and width, increased grain water content, and effectively alleviated the contradiction between source and sink. These changes promoted the carbohydrate partition in superior and inferior grains, improved their average filling rate in the middle and later stages, optimized the uniformity of inferior grain fillings, and finally led to the overall reduction in rice chalkiness.
