Effects of different unstable supports on EMG activity and balance

Abstract: This study analysed the equilibrium strategies and EMG activity during postural equilibrium in four different unstable surfaces. Thirteen team sport males were tested on a FLAT surface and on three different wobble boards (JAKOBS(®) with easy multidirectional displacements, FREEMAN with strong multidirectional displacements and LATERAL with unidirectional lateral displacements). They had to maintain single-limb stance during 5s for each condition. The right foot centre of pressure (COP) position and its variab… Show more

“…Standing on an unstable platform is inherently difficult for healthy individuals since the subject should align their CoM projection on the contact point of the unstable platform with ground (Cimadoro et al 2013, Ivanenko et al 1997). This condition requires increased activation of leg muscles to control the posture (Cimadoro et al 2013).…”

“…This condition requires increased activation of leg muscles to control the posture (Cimadoro et al 2013). Besides, imposing some disturbances like stiffening or loosening the support surface, interference with visual feedback or involvement of the CNS in asking a series of questions may elucidate the ability of the human neuro-musculoskeletal system in postural control (Ashtiani and Azghani 2018).…”

“…Os exercícios proprioceptivos estimulam a atividade da musculatura atuante no tornozelo, o que ajuda a explicar o incremento na estabilidade em atletas. Como no estudo de Cimadoro et al 20 , que avaliou 13 atletas de futebol, rugby e handebol com o tornozelo estável. Eles permaneciam em apoio unipodal durante cinco segundos, em três tipos de pranchas de equilíbrio.…”
