Effects of different surface finishing procedures on the change in surface roughness and color of a polymer infiltrated ceramic network material

Abstract: PURPOSEPolymer infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) materials, also called hybrid ceramics, are new materials in dental market. The manufacturer of the PICN material VITA Enamic suggests 3 different finishing procedures for this new material. In the present study, surface roughness and color differences caused from different finishing procedures of VITA Enamic were investigated.MATERIALS AND METHODS120 specimens were prepared in dimensions 2 × 10 × 12 mm from VITA Enamic hybrid ceramic blocks with 'high transluc… Show more

“…In addition. VITA ENAMIC had better internal and marginal adaptation than feldspathic ceramics as reported by pervious researches (20) . In terms of color matching, the manufacturer stated that VITA ENAMIC offers material properties that are almost identical to those of natural teeth.…”

“…Surface roughness is directly related to the optical properties of the materials. Özarslan et al showed different values of surface roughness and color changes when different finishing procedures were performed on PICN. The manufacturer of PICN (Vita) suggests 3 different finishing and polishing procedures (Technical Kit, Clinical Kit and VITA Enamic Glaze), which were tested.…”

“…It has been reported that this novel material is expected to have many advantages including decreased brittleness, hardness, and rigidity; enhanced flexibility; and better machinability and fracture toughness than ceramics . It is intended to create a material with the desired mechanical properties of ceramics and composites, which are conventional restorative materials …”

“…3 It is intended to create a material with the desired mechanical properties of ceramics and composites, which are conventional restorative materials. 7 The adhesion of indirect restorations to the tooth structure is a critical step affecting longevity and success of treatment. Bonding between indirect materials and tooth, obtaining high retention, preventing microleakage, and enhancing marginal adaptation are challenging issues.…”
