Effects of Different Proportions of Nutrients on Insects

Abstract: Digestibility and nutrient composition of foodstuffs, be they plant or not, and the nutritional requirements of insects vary. The qualitative nutritional requirements among insects are quite similar. Therefore, qualities of foodstuff as measured by its ability to promote or support growth, etc. depend on how well the nutrient composition of foodstuff made available by digestion fits the nutritional requirements of the insect. This is better seen using synthetic diets rather than plants. From such investigation… Show more

“…Host plant leaf extract surely added some extra water soluble nutrient supplements increasing the nutritive qualities of feed that might increase efficiency of spray solution in T2 and, showed positive and modified results over T1. House (1969) found that provided all essential nutrients are present, the proportions of essential nutrients in a foodstuff contribute more to nutritional quality than do the absolute amounts of nutrients. According to Spencer T. Behmer (2009) most phytophagous insect's performance is modified depending on food's nutrient composition.…”

“…Segundo House (1961) uma dieta artificial completa deve conter: proteínas ou aminoácidos, carboidratos, lipídios, vitaminas, principalmente as do grupo B, sais minerais e água. Entretanto, o balanço entre os nutrientes nas dietas é fundamental para proporcionar um melhor desenvolvimento dos insetos (House 1969). Em relação a dieta D 3 , associou-se ao leite em pó, ovo cru.…”

“…This was due to a combination of (preingestive) consumption effects, digestibility e ects and postdigestive metabolic e ects. At ®rst glance this outcome seems to ®t the TH; but again, nutritional imbalances could bring about the same result (see above and House 1969). Postdigestive detoxi®cation as well as uric acid production and wastage respiration could all have tied up energy from digested material and diverted it from growth.…”
