Effects of Different Materials on Biogas Production during Anaerobic Digestion of Food Waste

Abstract: One of the best methods for turning different types of biomass into clean energy is anaerobic digestion (AD). Organic and inorganic additives may be employed in the AD process to increase biogas output. It has been demonstrated that inorganic additives, such as micronutrients, can improve the efficiency of biogas producing reactors. These trace items can be introduced to the AD process as powders. The use of metal oxides in engineering and environmental research has become more popular. This study focuses on t… Show more

“…Furthermore, Fe (III) can precipitate H 2 S minimizing related inhibition phenomena [47]. The control of OA can allow a greater capacity of feed of the digester without affecting the performance of digestion significantly [33], and this is what happened in the present study as the OLRs used were higher than in the previous experiment [8], with higher fed volumes and a stable operation achieving higher CH 4 production.…”

“…It is worth mentioning that the NP used by Abdsalam et al [20] were synthesized, and that the NPs used by the present study and by Hansein et al [21] were obtained commercially. The size of NP is extremely important for the process as it can affect the binding and activation of membrane receptors and the expression of proteins [32], thus acting to stimulate the growth of methanogenic archaea [33].…”

“…Trace minerals, such as iron, zinc, manganese, cobalt, or selenium, are proven to positively alter the long-term digester stability, enhance organic matter degradation, and maintain relatively low volatile fatty acid levels [261,262] pointed out that the addition of TiO 2 and ZnO/Ag powders can improve the biogas yield.…”

“…These additives can address various challenges associated with biogas plant management, including poor feed quality, recalcitrant biomass and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) accumulation. By optimizing the conditions within the digester, biogas additives can help to increase biogas production, reduce operational problems and improve overall plant performance [14,15].…”
