Effects of different hyaluronic acid products on synovial fluid NO levels in knee osteoarthritis

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of different hyaluronic acid forms on synovial fluid nitric oxide (NO) levels and glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) activities in the treatment of patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Forty patients were equally randomized into two groups and treated with native sodium hyaluronate (group I) or with cross-linked hylan G-F 20 (group II). Clinical evaluations and synovial fluid aspirations were performed before the first (baseline), the second (week 1), and… Show more

“…Notably, cell adhesion is also highly correlated with the pathogenesis of AR and OA. Karatay et al (37) stated that the decreased intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 levels following intra-articular hyaluronic acid (HA) injection may aid in explaining the anti-inflammatory effects of HA therapy in OA of the knee.…”

“…Finally, a fourth trial evaluated biomarkers proximal to the signal osteoarthritis joint by measuring synovial fluid biomarkers in response to intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid [41]. The injections reduced synovial fluid levels of both intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 in patients with knee osteoarthritis (n = 40), providing a possible rationale for anti-inflammatory effects of hyaluronan therapy in knee osteoarthritis [41].…”

“…ICAM1 is expressed by many cell types, including fibroblasts, endothelial cells, some leukocytes, and also on the surface of osteoblasts (62). ICAM1 plays a role in the immune response; however, it might also be involved in the regulation of joint diseases (24,30). LOX is a copper-dependent enzyme that catalyzes cross-linking of collagen and elastin, which plays an important role in biological functions of extracellular matrix (56).…”
