Effects of Dietary Supplements on Adaptations to Endurance Training

Abstract: Endurance training leads to a variety of adaptations at the cellular and systemic levels that serve to minimise disruptions in whole-body homeostasis caused by exercise. These adaptations are differentially affected by training volume, training intensity, and training status, as well as by nutritional choices that can enhance or impair the response to training. A variety of supplements have been studied in the context of acute performance enhancement, but the effects of continued supplementation concurrent to … Show more

“…The search for the most effective exercise and dietary supplementation strategy to improve performance and/or health has yielded numerous studies throughout the years [ 21 ]. From the identification that physical exercise and skeletal muscle are important regulators of the KP [ 14 ], one important question arises: What are the fate and biological outcomes of TRP supplementation in sedentary vs. exercised individuals?…”

“…Although creatine supplementation has been quite effective in its ability to function as an ergogenic aid for anaerobic exercise, much less evidence and discussion exists surroundings its ability to benefit endurance performance [75]. When considering creatine's role from an energetic perspective, this is not surprising, as exercise bouts greater than 2 to 3 min in duration rely predominately on the oxidative system for the synthesis of ATP [76].…”

“…Its production is also related to an increase in blood flow, which enhances nutrient and hormone delivery. NO also has a favorable impact on resistance and endurance training adaptations [53,54]. Recent systematic reviews and meta-analysis about NO synthase-independent pathway supplements showed that potassium nitrate and sodium nitrate were less effective than beetroot juice on endurance exercise.…”
