Effects of Dietary Supplementation of Oregano Essential Oil to Sows on Oxidative Stress Status, Lactation Feed Intake of Sows, and Piglet Performance

Abstract: Fifty-four multiparous large white sows were used to determine the effects of supplementing oregano essential oil (OEO) to the gestation and lactation diets on oxidative stress status, lactation feed intake, and their piglet performance. Two groups were fed diets with (OEO; n = 28) or without (Control; n = 26) supplemental 15 mg/kg OEO during gestation and lactation. The serum levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) (P < 0.05), 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) (P < 0.05), and thiobarbituric acid reactive subs… Show more

“…Pregnancy and lactation pose a considerable metabolic challenge for sows. The demand for energy increases with oxygen uptake, which contributes to the production of ROS (Agarwal et al 2003;Tan et al 2015). During that time, sows are particularly susceptible to oxidative damage resulting from a deficiency of a-tocopherol and retinol (Berchieri-Ronchi et al 2011;Fan et al 2015).…”

“…Oregano essential oils (OEO), contained mostly carvacrol and thymol, had comparable antioxidant activity with vitamin E in vitro (Kulisic, Radonic, Katalinic, & Milos, ) and in vivo (Proestos, Chorianopoulos, Nychas, & Komaitis, ). Supplementing sow diets with OEO improved the oxidative stress and reproductive performance (Ariza‐Nieto et al., ; Tan et al., ). However, the effects of OEO in boar are not documented, especially when included in boar diet with strengthened fish oil.…”

“…of breeding sows and their feed intake during lactation directly affect the overall productivity of pig operations. Increased metabolic burdens on sows during late gestation and lactation cause elevated systemic oxidative stress during these important periods (1,2). Elevated oxidative stress is reported to be associated with pregnancy complications in highly prolific sows (3,4).…”
