Fats and oils are used to enhance the palatability of feed, absorb fat-soluble vitamins, and pass digesta through the gastrointestinal tract of poultry. The goal of current study was to see how dietary supplementation of Safflower seed (SS) affected on the production and hematological parameters of broiler chickens. A total of 200 male chickens (7-day-old) were randomly distributed into 5 treatments with each 5 replicate pens of 8 chicks in a 42-day trial. Each group was randomly allocated to one of 5 dietary treatments: (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10%) SS, respectively. The experimental diets were formulated for starter (7 to 21 days) and finisher (22 to 42 days) phase. Result indicated that inclusion of SS in diet improved body weight and feed conversion ratio during 7 to 42 days (P < 0.05). The highest and lowest body weight were observed in 5% SS and 0% SS levels, respectively. The obtained results demonstrated a significantly (P < 0.01) increased content of RBC, HB, PCV, Lymphocytes, MCV, MCH, MCHC, and Platelets in the blood of broiler chickens fed with various levels of SS for five weeks. Findings suggest that, SS may use as natural energy source to increase growth performance and improve hematological parameters.

The demand for free range and organic poultry products is on the rise and there is a discouraging trend of using poultry reared on feed containing antibiotics as growth promoters. The growing concerns about the use of antibiotics is not baseless though as there are fare chances that they may leave residues in animal tissues and can cause drug-resistance among pathogens. Therefore, the use of natural growth promoters in poultry feed is getting popularity and demand for scientific research is intensifying. The present study was planned to investigate the use of natural growth promoters in Japanese quail diet. The treatments were designated as follows: A (5g Curcuma longa (Turmeric), B (5g Capsicum annum (Red Pepper), C (10g Nigella sativa (Black Cumin), D (10g Pimpinella anisum (Anise seed), E (Combination of treatments A, B, C and D) and F (Control). The data were recorded on following parameters: Body weight, feed conversion ratio, dressing percentage, giblet weight, digestibility coefficients for CP (crude protein), CF (crude fiber), EE (ether extract) and NFE (nitrogen free extract), and nutritive value of DCP% (digestible crude protein), TDN% (total digestible nutrients), ME (metabolizable energy) and mortality. The results showed best feed conversion ratio (FCR) (2.15±0.02), better digestibility coefficients of CP (84.02±1.3), CF (27.97±0.3) and NFE (87.96±1.8), higher nutritive value of TDN% (68.81±1.2) and ME (2895±20), and lowest mortality (2.33±0.50) for birds fed on 5g Turmeric i.e. treatment A. Use of Black Cumin (treatment C) produced highest body weight (122.5±0.2), better FCR (2.31±0.02), good dressing percentage (56.7±0.4) and higher gizzard (2.7±0.01) and intestinal weights (7.5±0.02) than control. Nevertheless, the best dressing percentage (59.5±0.4) was obtained in case of feeding Anise seed i.e., treatment D. However, treatments B and E did not show significant improvement in any of the observed parameters. Results concluded that use of natural herbs and seeds such as Turmeric, Black Cumin and Anise seed is beneficial for quail growth production.

Meat industries across the world are constantly focusing to find natural low-cost additives for the development of novel meat products to meet consumer demand for improving the health benefits. In this study, we investigated the chemical composition and the bioactive compounds of some herbal plants, namely basil, thyme, sage, and their functionality on broiler chicken thigh meat quality. Chemical composition, as well as total antioxidant activity, polyphenols, vitamin E lutein and zeaxanthin and the fatty acids of the plants, were analyzed. According to findings, total polyphenols was 21.53 mg gallic acid/g in basil, 31.73 mg gallic acid/g in thyme and 38.87 mg gallic acid/g in sage. The antioxidant capacity was 19.91 mM Trolox in basil, 54.09 mM Trolox in thyme and 54.09 mM Trolox in sage. Lutein and zeaxanthin from basil was 267.91 mg/kg, 535.79 mg/kg in thyme and 99.89 mg/kg, and vitamin E ranged from 291.71 mg/kg in basil to 379.37 mg/kg in thyme and 148.07 mg/kg in sage, respectively. After, we developed a trial on 120 unsexed broiler chickens (n = 30) which were separated into four groups with six replications of five chickens each: control (C); 1% basil (B); 1% thyme (T) and 1% sage (S). The B, T and S groups deposited significantly higher (p < 0.05) concentration of zinc, polyphenols, antioxidant capacity and vitamin E in meat samples compared with the C group. In the experimental groups, the proportion of total polyunsaturated fatty acids, the ratio of n-6 to n-3 fatty acids, and the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids in the thigh muscles were significantly improved (p < 0.05). The tested plants exhibited a significant (p = 0.0007) hypocholesterolemic effect in the meat of the B (45.90 mg/g), T (41.60 mg/g) and S (48.80 mg/kg) experimental groups compared with the C (60.50 mg/g) group. These results support the application of the studied plants as natural sources of additives which could be effective in improving meat quality, from the human consumption perspective.
