Effects of dietary replacement of maize with malted or unmalted sorghum on the performance of weaner rabbits

Abstract: This study was carried out at the teaching and research farm of Bowen University, Iwo Nigeria. It was designed to evaluate the performance of weaner rabbits fed concentrate and plantain leaf at ratio 50:50. Thirty six crossbred weaner rabbits obtained by crossing Newzealand and Chinchilla breeds purchased from Agrited farm Ibadan, Nigeria were used for this study .They were divided into nine groups such that each dietary treatment was replicated thrice. Three dietary treatments were formulated as the concentra… Show more

“…Sprouted papaya seed meal significantly decreased breast meat yield in broiler chickens (Sugiharto et al, 2019). Results from this study are at variance with the reports that weaned rabbits fed sprouted sorghum had improved dressed weights compared to unsprouted sorghum ( Aderemi and Wuraola, 2010 ).…”

“…The immunological organs of broilers were not affected by replacement of soybean with germinated and nongerminated Mucuna pruriens grain meal ( Martínez-Pérez et al, 2016 ). However, in weaned rabbits, sprouted sorghum significantly lowered liver weight compared to the unsprouted and control diets ( Aderemi and Wuraola, 2010 ). The liver is an organ involved in detoxification, nutrient metabolism, and maintaining cholesterol homeostasis ( Kruit et al, 2006 ; Zaefarian et al ., 2019 ).…”

“…The value (8.37 to 12.61 X10 3 /mm 3 ) obtained for WBC, though significantly higher for rabbits fed 15% RASAKM diet, was still within the normal physiological range for rabbits (RAR, 2007). The RBC values indicate that rabbits have normocytic and normochromic red cells (Aderemi and Wuraola, 2010). Thus, explaining that feeding RASAKM diets up to 15% replacement for dietary maize to growing rabbits does not affect the utilization of iron.…”

“…The potential of rabbit meat as a good quality or nutritious food stemmed from its higher protein content, lower fat, lower sodium, and cholesterol contents compared with other meat sources such as beef, pork, mutton, and chickens (McLean-Meyinsse et al, 1994, Aderemi andWuraola, 2010. ).…”
