Effects of dietary fumonisin B1 on the onset of puberty, semen quality, fertility rates and testicular morphology in male rabbits

Abstract: The influences of dietary fumonisin B 1 (FB 1 ), a metabolite of Fusarium verticillioides, on the onset of puberty, semen quality, fertility rates and testicular morphology in male rabbits (bucks) were studied. Forty male rabbits were randomly assigned and fed four diets containing 0.13, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 mg FB 1 /kg, constituting diets 1 (control), 2, 3 and 4 respectively, for a period of 175 days in a completely randomized design. During the last week of the feeding trial, two untreated female rabbits were m… Show more

“…Semen samples were obtained by artificial vagina and collected into a sterile tube. Previously, males began the training period with an artificial vagina at 20 weeks of age (pubertal age [37]). Training was performed for 4 weeks and then males started the trial (24 weeks of age).…”

“…Semen evaluation: Semen after dilution, equilibration and thawing was evaluated for progressive sperm motility percentage under a phase contrast microscope (Penta View LCD Digital Microscope) with closed circuit television (Ewuola and Egbunike, 2010). The motility was examined after dilution, equilibration and thawing.…”

“…Abnormal sperm percentage was assayed by staining smears with Eosin-Nigrosin according to Campell et al (1956) by light microscope. All sperm cells with coiled or double tail, damaged mid-piece and damaged or detached head were considered abnormal (Ewuola and Egbunike, 2010).…”

“…In a more recent study, the weights of male rabbits were not significantly affected by fumonisin exposure of 7.5 and 10.0 mg FB 1 /kg feed (diets prepared using F. verticillioides culture material). However, onset of puberty in these male rabbits was significantly delayed by 9 to 12 days (Ewuola & Egbunike, ). In another study, the total weight gained and efficiency in feed conversion of rabbits fed with diets containing 2.5 to 7.5 mg FB 1 /kg from F. verticillioides culture material was 38.6% to 58.6% and 37.8% to 57.8% of those on the control diet (Adu & Gbore, ).…”
