Effects of Die Dimensions for Curvature Extrusion of Curved Rectangular Bars

Abstract: The effects of die dimensions on curvature-extrusion curved rectangular bars were investigated by experiments and numerical simulations. We conducted simulations and experiments of rectangular bar production using various die dimensions. The calculated trend of curvature showed good agreement with the experiment results, thereby validating the numerical simulation results. The curvature increases concomitantly with increasing exit height and exit width. The effect of die thickness on curvature is slight. Regar… Show more

“…Material flow velocity distribution over a cross-section in the deformation zone can be influenced by exploiting an inclined die. Shiraishi et al [ 91 , 92 ] proposed an extrusion-bending integrated forming method where a billet is extruded through an inclined die orifice, as illustrated in Figure 24 . Curvature of the extruded profiles can be varied by varying the inclination angle, an increase of which leads to increased curvature.…”

“…Another way of achieving extrusion-bending integration is by utilising an inclined die, through which the material flow velocity distribution along the profile cross-section in the deformation zone can be adjusted. Shiraishi et al [15][16][17] proposed a novel integrated extrusion-bending forming method for producing curved profiles, in which a billet is extruded through a die aperture inclined towards the central axis of the container at a predetermined angle. Experiments were carried out using plasticine as billets and it was found that by adjusting the inclination angle of the die aperture, the curvature of the extruded profile can be varied, and greater inclination angle leads to increased curvature.…”

“…Based on this idea, some scholars putforward a new bending products forming method. Shiraishi et al [7][8][9] used an inclined die to obtain pipes and bars with curvature and found that the exit height and the inclination angle of the die are important factors that affects the curvature of the products. Zhou et al [10][11][12][13] developed differential velocity sideways extrusion (DVSE) process to directly manufacture curved profiles from conventional billet material in one operation.…”
