Effects of demographic and ethnohistorical factors on average heterozygosities of South Amerindians

Abstract: Recent investigations have shown that average within-Tupi genetic distances differ from within-Carib distances, which is possibly due to differences in effective size of the populations belonging to these two linguistic stocks of South American tribes. The aim of this paper is to verify the influence of demographic factors and of interpopulation contacts on the degree of intragroup genetic variability of 18 South American native groups (eight Carib, seven Tupi, and three Gê). The mean per locus per individual … Show more

“…Many studies give credence to the importance of language, cultural differences, and geographic distance as barriers to gene flow, and as determinants of genetic differentiation. Generally, research has focused on the genetic differences among several ethnic groups located over a large geographical area, e.g., in Italy (Barbujani and Sokal, 1991a,b;Barbujani et al, 1992), the Caucasus (Barbujani et al, 1994a,b), India (Sirajuddin et al, 1994), South America (Aguiar, 1992;Rickards et al, 1994), Central America (Barrantes et al, 1990), Hungary (Guglielmo and Beres, 1996), and Bougainville Island (Friedlaender, 1975;Relethford, 1985).…”

“…In recent decades, extensive reports of polymorphic protein markers have been published for several South American native populations (see the compilations of Mourant et al, 1976;Roychoudhury and Nei, 1988;Salzano and Callegari-Jacques, 1988;Cavalli-Sforza et al, 1994). In spite of an earlier suggestion by Spielman et al (1979) concerning the intricate evolutionary relationships among Amerindian populations, successive genetic studies have led to inferences about aspects of the demographic and biological history of Native American populations (O'Rourke et al, 1985; Callegari-Jacques and Salzano, 1989;Silva, 1989, 1992;Black, 1991;Souza Aguiar and Neves, 1991;Souza-Aguiar, 1992;Cavalli-Sforza et al, 1994;Rickards et al, 1994;Lahr, 1995;Rothhammer et al, 1997). All these studies have used a common set of statistical methodologies, called multivariate (Menozzi et al, 1978), which consider the information contained at different loci simultaneously.…”
