“…Danggui-Shaoyao-San (DSS) originated from the earliest Chinese monograph on the diagnosis and treatment of miscellaneous diseases, “Synopsis of Golden Chamber”, and is a traditional compound Chinese medicinal preparation composed mainly of Angelica and Paeoniae, which has been used since ancient times to nourish the heart and calm the mind, and modern studies have confirmed that this formula can significantly improve depression. 7 , 8 In recent years, famous Sichuan traditional Chinese medicine practitioners combined the clinical herbal characteristics and clinical medication experience to further improve the basis DSS of adding diuretic and kidney-nourishing herbs such as Rehmanniae, Poria and Amomum, etc., which nourish the liver and kidney, to form Modified Danggui-Shaoyao-San (MDSS). In the MDSS formula, Rehmanniae enters the kidneys and diuretic, while Angelica enters the liver, nourishes yin, nourishes blood, activates blood circulation, and invigorates blood circulation, which has become a famous local formula for the treatment of depression in CKD.…”

“… Xu et al (2011) suggested that DSS exerted an antidepressant effect in the forced swimming test (FST) and chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) models through influencing the central arginine vasopressin (AVP) system. Li et al (2022) demonstrated that DSS pretreatment can restore the impaired abilities of rats caused by ETM-induced depression- and anxiety-like behavior. Although the antidepressant effect of DSS has been discovered, the functional components and underlying mechanisms are still unclear at a systematic and comprehensive level.…”

“…DSS is one of the representative formulae to harmonize the liver and the spleen ( Xu et al, 2011 ). The clinical and pharmacological studies showed that DSS could relieve depressive symptoms in postmenopausal women ( Koike et al, 2004 ; Terauchi et al, 2014 ) and experimental animal ( Xu et al, 2011 ; Li et al, 2022 ). Terauchi et al (2014) demonstrated that DSS was effective in treating the symptoms of headaches and concomitant depression in women.…”

“…Actually, DSS used to be primarily used to treat gynecological diseases (Kotani et al, 1997;Lee et al, 2016). Subsequently, researchers have demonstrated that DSS can be applicable to ameliorate neurological disorders including Alzheimer's disease (Huang et al, 2020;Kim and Cho, 2020;Li et al, 2021). Fu et al (2022) recently reviewed that polysaccharide extracted from DSS play significant roles in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease through various mechanisms, such as antiinflammatory, anti-neuronal injury, and immune regulation.…”
