Effects of Damping and Varying Contact Area at Blade-Disk Joints in Forced Response Analysis of Bladed Disk Assemblies

Abstract: An approach is developed to analyze the multiharmonic forced response of large-scale finite element models of bladed disks taking account of the nonlinear forces acting at the contact interfaces of blade roots. Area contact interaction is modeled by area friction contact elements which allow for friction stresses under variable normal load, unilateral contacts, clearances, and interferences. Examples of application of the new approach to the analysis of root damping and forced response levels are given and num… Show more

“…The scalability of approaches using the HB method with or without reduction techniques (e.g. component mode synthesis [37]) is discussed and shown in [31,38,39,40]. Besides the scalability of the HB method, these works show the method's ability to handle few, but arbitrary nonlinearities for large FE-models.…”

“…Many reduced-order modelling techniques dedicated to the mistuning of bladed disk can be found in the literature [33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40], and prove very efficient as long as the study is focused on linear structures. However, taking into account nonlinearities in the simulations can be of primary importance in the design process since they are known to have a strong impact on the vibration level, as pointed out in several numerical and experimental investigations [41][42][43]. A detailed review on vibration prediction of bladed disks in the presence of friction phenomena can be found in [44].…”

“…In the context of turbine engines, Griffin (1980), Sinha and Griffin (1984), Petrov and Ewins (2006) and Cigeroglu et al (2009) have applied the HB method and its extensions to the study of the forced response of gas turbine blades and discs. Griffin (1980) and Sinha and Griffin (1984) have comprehensively analyzed the dynamics of flutters and friction dampers in mistuned bladed disc assemblies.…”
