2A correlation between the change in magnetic susceptibility (Δχexp) upon crystallization of Cu-Zr and Hf metallic glasses (MG) with their glass forming ability (GFA) observed recently, is found to apply to Cu-Ti and Zr-Ni alloys, too.In particular, small Δχexp, which reflects similar electronic structures, ES, of glassy and corresponding crystalline alloys, corresponds to high GFA. Here, we studied Δχexp for five Cu-Ti and four Cu-Zr and Ni-Zr MGs. The fully crystalline final state of all alloys was verified from X-ray diffraction patterns. The variation of GFA with composition in Cu-Ti, Cu-Zr and Cu-Hf MGs was established from the variation of the corresponding critical casting thickness, dc. Due to the absence of data for dc in Ni-Zr MGs their GFA was described using empirical criteria, such as the reduced glass transition temperature. A very good correlation between Δχexp and dc (and/or other criteria for GFA) was observed for all alloys studied. The correlation between the ES and GFA showed up best for Cu-Zr and NiZr2 alloys where direct data for the change in ES (ΔES) upon crystallization are available. The applicability of the Δχexp (ΔES) criterion for high GFA (which provides a simple way to select the compositions with high GFA) to other metalmetal MGs (including ternary and multicomponent bulk MGs) is briefly discussed.

The low temperature specific heats of (Fe0.5Co0.5)72B20Si4Nb4 amorphous and crystallized alloys are measured and analyzed from 1.4 to 110 K. Specific heats can be well fitted by electronic and phonon contribution terms. It is found that the electronic contribution term in specific heat for amorphous alloy is larger than that for crystallized one, and this phenomenon has been interpreted in detail. The research shows that the electronic density of states at the Fermi level and the localized loose “rattler” atoms in oversized cage structure may make contributions to the enhancement of electronic specific heat coefficient γ, and result in a larger electronic contribution term. This study is significant for further understanding the structure–property relationship for amorphous alloys at low temperature.

Material genetic engineering can significantly accelerate the development of new materials. As an important topic in material science and condensed matter physics, the development of metallic glasses (MGs) with specific properties has largely been the result of trial and error since their discovery in 1960. Yet, property design based on the physical parameters of constituent elements of MGs remains a huge challenge owing to the lack of an understanding of the property inheritance from constitute elements to the resultant alloys. In this work, we report the inherent relationships of the yield strength σy, Young’s modulus E, and shear Modulus G with the valence electron density. More importantly, we revealed that the electronic density of states (EDOS) at the Fermi surface (EF) is an inheritance factor for the physical properties of MGs. The physical properties of MGs are inherited from the specific element with the largest coefficient of electronic specific heat (γi), which dominates the value of the EDOS at EF. This work not only contributes to the understanding of property inheritances but also guides the design of novel MGs with specific properties based on material genetic engineering.
