Effects of Cryogenic Treatment on Micro-Mechanical Properties of a Cu-Al Alloy

Abstract: After heat treatment at 800°C for 15min, a Cu-Al alloy was cryogenic treated at -196°C for 30min, the micro-mechanical properties of the Cu-Al alloy before and after cryogenic treatment were measured by nanometer mechanical testing system and the microstructure of the Cu-Al alloy were also analyzed by optical microscope, SEM/EDS and XRD. On the basis of that, the effects of cryogenic treatment on micro-mechanical properties of the Cu-Al alloy were investigated. The results show that the cryogenic treatment can… Show more

“…Therefore, research on improve the compressive strength of the aluminum bronze has a certain practical significance. In recent years, the research results show that cryogenic treatment can improve the microstructure and mechanical properties of copper alloy [1][2][3] , but the cryogenic treatment on the compressive properties of copper alloy research reports less. In view of this, in this paper, the compressive strength of aluminum bronze before and after cryogenic treatment were test, and discussed the cryogenic treatment on the compressive properties of aluminum bronze.…”

“…Cryogenic treatment can improve the strength, abrasion resistance and damping performance of metal materials, at the same time also can improve the uniformity of material and improve the dimension stability [1][2], and therefore is widely used in metal materials modification research work. According to reports in the literature of recent year [3][4], cryogenic treatment can improve the mechanical properties of copper alloy and thermal physical properties, But the report on the room temperature creep properties of copper alloy by cryogenic treatment a little. The room temperature creep properties of copper alloy directly influences its service life, and the use of the traditional test method of uniaxial tensile is hard to measure the room temperature creep properties of materials [5]. Nano indentation test system has a very high load and displacement resolution, and it is not restricted by sample shape and size, it is an effective means of measuring room temperature micro mechanical properties of materials [6][7].…”

“…Cryogenic treatment as the supplementary process to conventional heat treatment has been successfully proved to enhance wear resistance and mechanical properties of various materials due to its simple operation, lower price, and being environmentally friendly and none-damaging to work piece [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. And the process has a wide range of applications from industrial tooling to the improvement of musical signal transmission, such as machining, cutting, rolling, deburring, etc.…”
