Effects of creative expression program on the event-related potential and task reaction time of elderly with mild cognitive impairment

Abstract: Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a 16-week creative expression intervention program (CrExp) on the event-related potential (ERP) and task reaction time in older individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods This study is a randomized controlled clinical trial conducted in the Memory Center of Fujian Provincial hospital. Thirty-six MCI patients were randomly distributed into two groups. One group underwent a 16-week creative expression p… Show more

“…Also, compared with healthy elderly individuals, the MCI cohort exhibited lower accuracy and slower reaction times when performing the Flanker task ( Luks et al, 2010 ; Wang et al, 2013 ) which corresponded to anomalies in the DLPFC and the ACC ( Luks et al, 2010 ). Previous studies have shown that a 16-week creative expression program consisting of creative storytelling activities of 60 min/session facilitated by a group of professional therapists could shorten the reaction times when performing the auditory oddball paradigm ( Zhao et al, 2020 ). In the present study, the magic intervention program also significantly improved the accuracy and reaction time performance in patients with MCI when performing the Flanker task, suggesting that this cognitive intervention mode facilitated by the magic intervention may enhance the attention and the efficiency of cognitive processing related to inhibitory control in elderly people with MCI ( Parris et al, 2009 ).…”

“…In particular, the participants' functional brain activity during visuospatial working memory and executive tasks will be assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in order to determine whether cognitive improvements in SIACI participants are associated with alterations in functional brain activation (which may underlie potential compensatory mechanisms that improve cognitive performance). In addition, effective interventions modify changes that are known to occur in neurodegenerative diseases (like AD), such as changes in neuroprotective growth factors (e.g., brain-derived neurotrophic factor [BDNF]) [33], inflammatory factors (e.g., interleukin [IL]-6 and tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α) [34,35], AD-related pathological biomarkers (e.g., Aβ and phosphorylated tau) [36,37], cognition-related electrophysiological effects (e.g., eventrelated potential [ERP]-P300) [38], and reduced neurocognitive functions. We hypothesized that the 16-week, 24-session SIACI will effectively improve neurocognitive performance in older adults with CIs, potentially via divergent molecules (e.g., BDNF, IL-6, TNF-α, Aβ-42, Aβ-40, and phosphorylated and total tau) and neural pathways.…”

“…Each session included 10 min of body-relaxing exercises, followed by 30 min of core cognitive strengthen items. More process information can be found in our previous publication (2021, Zhao et al ., 2018).…”
