“…Among the three samples, the Cr concentration of the passive film surface that formed on A0, A1, and A2 samples is approximately 11.1 at %, 11.8 at %, and 10.3 at %, which is in a trend of A1 > A0 > A2. The surface enrichment of the Cr element could accelerate the formation of a passive film with greater resistance to the attack of Cl – ions in acid media [ 54 ]. Therefore, a better corrosion-resistant performance can be expected for the A1 sample.…”

“…The Tafel extrapolation method was used to calculate the corrosion potential ( E corr ), corrosion current density ( I corr ), Tafel anode slope (β a ), and Tafel cathode slope (β c ), and the results are listed in Table . A displacement of E corr greater than 85 mV could be considered as an anodic or cathodic corrosion inhibition mechanism, and the CNZO coating E corr value shifted the most in the positive potential direction relative to the blank coating, 89 mV, indicating that the corrosion inhibitor acted as an anodic inhibitor. In addition, the cathodic curves of all samples did not show the typical plateau area due to dissolved oxygen reduction, indicating that the cathodic reaction was basically under charge transfer control .…”

“…Al and Ti were, in fact, firstly chosen as the major elements because AlTiN coating has demonstrated outstanding mechanical properties and tribological performance and has been widely used for cutting tools [22][23][24]. Cr, V and Mo elements were also incorporated into the coating, with the goal to improve the thermal stability [25], oxidation/corrosion resistance and solid lubricity of the coating [26,27]. This composition continues to build upon existing (AlCrTiV)N, which was reported to have excellent mechanical properties [28].…”
