Fate and effects of cadmium on the development of North Sea coastal plankton communities, enclosed in plastic bags containing 1.5 m3 natural water, were studled in 2 experiments. Both experiments were carried out in summer-autumn and lasted 11 and 7 weeks respectively. Cadmium chloride was added to different bags in single doses of 1, 5 and 50 pg Cd I-'; in the first experiment additional doses of 100 and 250 pg Cd 1-' were added in the middle of the experiment to 2 of 6 bags. At the end of the experiments 4-9 % of the added cadmium was recovered in the sediment, the remainder was still in the water phase. Addition of 5 or 50 pg Cd I-' resulted in slightly higher phytoplankton concentrations in one experiment. The mortality of copepods was increased by addition of 250 or 100 pg Cd I-'; addition of 50 pg Cd 1-' resulted in a much lower zooplankton biomass. Due to differences in the sensitivity of different species, a d d~t i o n of 50 pg Cd I-' caused a change In species compos~tion of the zooplankton community compared to controls. Growth of Pleurobrachia p~l e u s was inhibited at 5 and 1 pg Cd I-', leading to differences in the numbers of copepods between controls and treated bags. At concentrations of 50 pg C d I-' or higher no P. pileus were found. Concentrations of 1-5 pg Cd 1-' occur locally in polluted waters. The first experiment lasted more than 3 months and showed that nutrient regeneration rates in the bags are large enough to enable the system to persist without artificial nutrient additions.

Dissolved nutrient concentrations in natural waters may at times be controlled by interactions between particulate and solution phases. Effects of Zn [O-l PM total Zn(II)] and orthophosphate (8-12 PM total P) additions on growth indices for the chlorophyte Selenastrum capricornutum Printz were examined in a synthetic growth medium containing 50 mg liter-l colloidal titania. Over the Zn(H) concentration range used, detrimental growth and yield effects were observed. Addition of P to a synthetic growth medium (S-3) increased stationary phase cell density, but had minimal effect on growth rate and duration of lag phase. Presence of TiO, particles in culture media significantly reduced Zn and P dissolved fractions. Although adsorbed Zn and P were less available to Selenastrum, desorption of both solutes increased their availability. Rapid desorption of Zn(I1) from TiO, particles served in effect to buffer Zn2+ free ion concentration, until Zn became partitioned primarily with the algal fraction as cell concentration approached stationary phase density. Although phosphate desorption from TiO, in nonbiological systems was negligible, Sefenastrum was able to scavenge some P initially adsorbed onto TiO,. Accurate primary productivity predictions in nature may therefore require an understanding of equilibrium and reaction rates involved in the partitioning of nutrients and toxic substances between dissolved and particulate phases.

Des expériences parallèles ont été poursuivies au laboratoire avec des populations indigènes (chlorophycées ou diatomées) maintenues en chémostat pour étudier la toxicité du cuivre sous les formes ionique, complexée (à de l'acide humique) et adsorbée (à des fibres de cellulose provenant d'une papeterie régionale); les effets du cuivre sont précisés en considérant la composition spécifique, la biomasse et les taux d'assimilation de carbone des populations naturelles. Avec les chlorophycées, les taux de production primaire étaient plus fortement inhibés par le cuivre que les teneurs en chlorophylle Û, tandis qu'avec les diatomées, la densité cellulaire, la biomasse et les taux de production primaire sont tous fortement inhibés par le cuivre. Par ailleurs, la présence d'acide humique et de fibres de cellulose réduit sans équivoque l'action toxique du cuivre. Une telle observation s'avère importante pour 1'écophysiologie du phytoplancton de la rivière du Saguenay puisque les eaux de ce milieu côtier reçoivent à la fois Effets du cuivre sur les fluctuations temporelles de la chlorophylle A, des taux de production primaire et des rapports P/B des populations naturelles de phytoplancton de la rivière du Saguenay incubées "in vitro" lors de l'expérience I (station Shipshaw; juillet 1981). Les concentrations de cuivre indiquées sont atteintes à 14g (t).
