Effects of conventional CPB and mini-CPB on neutrophils CD162, CD166 and CD195 expression

Abstract: Objective: Cardiac surgery is known to trigger a systemic inflammatory response. While the use of conventional cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) results in profound inflammation, modified mini-CPB is considered less harmful. We evaluated the impact of cardiac surgery on the expression of CD162, CD166, CD195 molecules and their association with the type of CPB used. Methods and Results: Twenty-four patients were enrolled in our study. Twelve of them were operated using conventional CPB while the other twelve patient… Show more

“…Exclusion criteria were pregnancy, emergency operations and patients aged less than 18 years. Out of these 107 patients, 3 patients received "off-pump" cardiac surgery; these three patients were excluded from the analysis due a potentially different activation of immune cells that had not been exposed to extracorporeal circulation 16,17 . Patient data, clinical information and blood samples were collected prospectively immediately before (pre) surgery, after (post) surgery as well as 1 day and 4 days after cardiac surgery.…”

“…Events were specifically gated on granulocytes. [Color figure can be viewed at wileyonlinelibrary.com] serious organ failures in the postoperative period, as reflected by a higher SOFA score on D0 (median SOFA: 6 [6][7] vs. 5 [4][5][6], P = 0.037) and on D1 (median SOFA: 2 [1][2][3][4][5] vs. 6 [4][5][6][7][8], P = 0.029). No other preoperative or intraoperative clinical and biological parameters were associated with early postoperative infectious complications ( Supplementary Table S4).…”

“…Alternatively, it fosters anti-inflammatory cascades by activating its cognate receptor, the CD200R (11). Low level of CD200 is associated with autoimmune disease progression, such as arthritis and neurodegenerative disorders (12). 4 Conversely, high CD200 expression promotes immune ignorance, which can enable cancer progression (12).…”

“…Low level of CD200 is associated with autoimmune disease progression, such as arthritis and neurodegenerative disorders (12). 4 Conversely, high CD200 expression promotes immune ignorance, which can enable cancer progression (12). As for the role of CD200 in lungs, the main focus has been on virus-induced inflammation, showing that CD200 limits both the amplitude and the duration of the inflammatory response (13).…”
