The present study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of aspirin as anti-heat stressor. Broiler chicks were reared on a standard diet up to 14 days of age. Thereafter, the chicks were randomly distributed into three dietary treatment groups viz., T1 (Control group: Standard diet), T2 (Standard diet with aspirin@250 mg/kg) and T3 (Standard diet with aspirin@500 mg/kg). Each treatment was having five replicates of eight birds per replicate. Experiment was carried out during hot-dry (April-May, 30.0±0.7 0 to 37.0±1.4 0 C, Rh, %: 58.05±1.32 to 70.11±0.82) summer. Feed intake and live weight gain was comparable among the treatments but FCR, protein and energy efficiency improved significantly (P<0.001) on aspirin supplementation. The relative yield of thymus and bursa at 4 th and 6 th week of age improved significantly (P<0.05). The percentage of protein, aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) increased significantly (P<0.001) due to aspirin supplementation at 4 th as well as 6 th week of age. While H:L ratio, serum corticosteron and serum cholesterol (only at 42 nd day of age) decreased significantly (P<0.001) in aspirin supplemented groups at 28 th as well as 42 nd day of age. Supplementation of aspirin at 500 mg/kg reduced relative expression of HSP70 in jejunum tissues during 28 th or 42 nd day of age. It can be concluded that aspirin supplementation 500 mg/kg in diet of heat stressed broilers improved performance as well as welfare.

Abstract:The current work aimed to investigate the protective effects of Tribulus terrestris extracts against ivermectin-induced hepatic and renal toxicity in male rabbit. Selenium plus vitamin E was used as a comparative standard drug to evaluate the efficacy of Tribulus terrestris extract on some hematological parameters, kidney and liver enzymes as well as associated histopathological changes. This work was carried out on thirty male New Zealand rabbits for two successive months. Animals were divided into five groups of six rabbits each. The 1st group was designated as the negative control; the 2nd group was subcutaneously injected with ivermectin (IVM) (200µg/kg/month). The 3rd group was treated daily with selenium plus vitamin E (Se + vit E) after IVM injection. The 4th and 5th groups were treated with Tribulus terrestris Ethanol Extract (TTE) and Tribulus Terrestris Ethyl Acetate extract (TTEA) respectively at a dose of 5mg/kg/day after IVM injection. Hematological results showed significant (P<0.05) increases in RBCs, hemoglobin and hematocrit percentage after both TTE and TTEA extracts treatment compared to IVM and Se + vit E groups. There was a significant decrease in AST activity in TTE and Se + vit E treated groups (17.17±0.95 and 16.50±0.76 U/L) and non-significant decreased activity in TTEA group (18.83±0.6 U/L) compared with IVM injected group (21.5±1.31 U/L). Moreover, there were non-significant (P<0.05) changes in both serum creatinine and urea concentrations in IVM, TTE, TTEA and Se + vit E treated groups. Regarding to histo-architectural changes, TTE treated group revealed mild degenerative changes in the renal parenchyma with congested blood vessels, meanwhile, the TTEA treated group revealed few degenerative changes in hepatocytes. This study concluded that, Tribulus terrestris extracts could be used as an effective treatment to ameliorate the ivermectin-induced renal and hepatic toxicity in rabbits.

Acta Vet Brno 2007, 76: 3-8 The effects of feed supplementation with organic form of selenium (Se) on ruminal enzyme activities (ALT, AST, GGT, ALP and GDH), blood enzyme activity (GPx), serum enzyme activities (LDH, CK) and haematological indicators were examined in lambs. Ten animals were divided into two groups and fed experimental diets for 3 months. The first group received a basic diet (BD) providing a daily intake 50.6 µg of Se only. The diet for the second group consisted of BD supplemented with selenium 0.3 mg·kg -1 DM in the form of Se-enriched yeast and giving a total daily intake 278 µg of Se per animal. Lambs of the second group which were fed additional Se had increased concentrations of Se in plasma (P < 0.001), greater activity of blood glutathione peroxidase (GPx) (P < 0.001) and lower activity of creatine kinase (CK) (P < 0.05) in serum. The activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (P < 0.001) and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) (P < 0.001) in ruminal fluid were found to be significantly higher in Se-yeast group of lamb compared with the group given BD with no differences for Se concentration in ruminal fluid and ALT, AST and GGT activities. Total erythrocyte count and osmotic resistance of red blood cells were significantly higher (P < 0.01) in selenium-supplemented animals. White blood cell count was increased in lambs given BD (P < 0.05). It was concluded that Se supplementation can influence ruminal enzyme activities and cell membrane resistance of lambs.
