Effects of conservation status of the riparian vegetation on fish assemblage structure in neotropical headwater streams

Abstract: The aims of this study were to investigate the relationships between the riparian vegetation and fish assemblages (structure, composition and diet) in forested (Riparian Cover C80%; Canopy cover C90%) and deforested (RC \ 80%; CC \ 90%) headwater streams and to test how those assemblage characteristics respond temporally in streams with different conservation conditions. We sampled in five Neotropical headwater streams during dry and wet season in areas of natural and degraded riparian vegetation on central Br… Show more

“…Protection of its habitats should consider not only the environmental quality of the streams, but also the integrity of adjacent riparian vegetation. The importance of riparian vegetation to fish diet is well recognized and documented for the allochthonous feeder Astyanax species (Gomiero and Braga, 2003;Borba et al, 2008;Ferreira et al, 2012;Souza and Lima-Junior, 2013;Silva et al, 2014;Leite et al, 2015). Conserving the streams is also important for those autochthonous feeders (Cavalheiro and Fialho, 2016).…”

“…It is, therefore, uncertain which of the abiotic variables (i.e., environmental, hydrological, and spatial variables) best explain the fish assemblage patterns on the regional scale [13,14]. Moreover, knowledge of the influence of regional constraints and historical processes on species contribution, abundance, and diversity remain superficial, although it has been considered critical for an advance in stream fish ecology and conservation [15,16].…”
