Effects of consanguinity in a cohort of subjects with certain genetic disorders in Qatar

Abstract: Background: Consanguineous marriages are common in the Middle East including the Gulf countries. The rate of consanguinity in Qatar is approximately 54%, which are mainly first cousins' marriages. Previous studies showed that consanguinity increases the prevalence of birth defects and other genetic disorders. Thus, we studied the effects of consanguinity in a cohort of subjects with certain genetic disorders in Qatar. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at two centers in Qatar (Hamad Medical Corp… Show more

“…We detected new variants by direct whole genome sequencing, which has increased power and precision for finding causative variants than array and imputation technologies. Furthermore, the Qatari population is known for high consanguinity (~65% first-cousin consanguinity) [ 18 ], and consanguineous populations have elevated homozygosity, facilitating the detection of novel genetic variants that cannot be detected in outbred populations [ 19 ]. Fifteen SNPs with genome-wide significance with total body BMD were identified, five of which had previously been reported by the UK biobank and GEFOS as well as ten new variants.…”

“…Scientists have associated consanguinity with a higher rate of birth defects as well as genetic disorders [30]. One study assessed the prevalence of consanguinity among Qataris and their knowledge of associated risks.…”
