Effects of Concentration Variations on the Performance and Microbial Community in Microbial Fuel Cell Using Swine Wastewater

Abstract: The variation of substrate concentration in anode chamber directly affects the power generation efficiency and decontamination performance of microbial fuel cell (MFC). In this study, three concentrations of swine wastewater with 800 mg/L, 1600 mg/L and 2500 mg/L were selected as substrates, and the performance of MFC and response characteristics of anode microbial community were investigated. The results show that the concentration of a selected substrate is positively correlated with the output voltage of MF… Show more

“…The detailed cleaning method is to soak PPTA in acetone for 1 h, then boil it with absolute ethanol and distilled water, and then filter the mixture and put it in an oven to dry for later use. The wastewater is treated in a harmless manner [36,37]. The SEM morphology of the PPTA surface is shown in Figure 3a.…”

“…The MFC power output peaked at a current density of 3.1 A/m 2 (1.9 W/m 2 ) and tripled the control cell (0.6 W/m 2 ). MFCs have been commonly characterised under a constant load discharge, typically 1000 Ω [4,8,21,25,26]. As such, the current output is around 0.6 mA and deteriorates as the cell voltage decreases, often rapidly.…”

“…By enriching microorganism in the anode compartment, the MFC system can ECOTROPHIC • 15(2): 204-212 p-ISSN:1907-5626,e-ISSN: 2503-3395 degrade the complex organic matter and generate electrons and protons at the same time. The protons will pass through the membrane while the electrons will be pumped to the anode and reach the cathode via external circuit (Ni et al 2020;Prathiba et al 2021). Based on Table 1, the COD 0 and COD t of PBM substrate were obtained around 1.060 g/L and 303 g/L, respectively.…”
